Returning to her character's strong and silent demeanor, Stephanie Beatriz uncovers an unexpected parallel between the making of Twisted Metal and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Together, they embark on a journey across a post-apocalyptic country to deliver a mysterious package while seeking revenge for her brother's murder.
Twisted Metal season 1 has been met with positive reception from both critics and audiences. The show's thrilling action, effective humor, and the performances of its cast have been widely praised.
In anticipation of the show's release and prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Screen Rant conducted an exclusive interview with Stephanie Beatriz to discuss her role in Twisted Metal. When asked about her collaboration with showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith in bringing her character, Quiet, to life, Beatriz praised Smith's skills and highlighted the similarities she found between working with him and her experience on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Here's what she had to say:
"[Showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith] is an amazing collaborator and a fantastic showrunner. He's a true nerd at heart and has a deep love for comedy, just like me. Having someone who believes in you as an actor is such a wonderful gift, especially when it comes to comedy. It's great to have someone who appreciates your jokes and thinks the same way you do. On set, there was always a back-and-forth between us whenever I had any ideas or suggestions. MJ really valued my sensibility and tone, which I had developed during my time on Brooklyn Nine-Nine in a highly collaborative environment. Andy Samberg was an incredible lead on that show, creating an atmosphere where we all felt free to play, and MJ did the same on Twisted Metal."
How Twisted Metal's Quiet Compares To B99's Rosa
: Before the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes took place, it's important to acknowledge the significant contributions made by the writers and actors in WGA and SAG-AFTRA to the creation of the show discussed in this interview.Prior to the show's launch, Beatriz's character in Twisted Metal drew numerous comparisons to Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Rosa. Both women possessed a propensity for violence and adopted a reserved demeanor, particularly with Quiet, who was quite literally named so. However, despite these initial apparent similarities, audiences who watched the video game show's premiere have been captivated by the contrasting aspects of the characters. Quiet, in particular, has a significantly more tragic backstory compared to Rosa, and demonstrates a greater ability to open up to strangers within a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Interestingly, the connections to Brooklyn Nine-Nine don't end with Beatriz's similar characters and collaborative process. In Twisted Metal, there was a guest appearance by Jason Mantzoukas, who played the unstable undercover detective Adrian Pimento and was also Rosa's love interest for a part of the show. In Twisted Metal, Mantzoukas portrays a crazed former priest who leads an unhinged cult called the Holy Men. They steal Doe's beloved car, Evelyn. It's worth noting that Beatriz suggested Mantzoukas for this role, which resulted in a Brooklyn Nine-Nine reunion that had the crew laughing.
Similar to Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Rosa, the season 1 finale of Twisted Metal reveals Beatriz's character, Quiet, making a sacrifice. She puts aside her growing feelings for Mackie's Doe and allows him to live a seemingly perfect life in New San Francisco. Meanwhile, Quiet takes on the role of a post-apocalyptic Robin Hood, disrupting the milkman delivery system and giving supplies meant for walled-off cities to stranded survivors. The finale also sets up Calypso enlisting Doe and other characters for the first Twisted Metal tournament. It'll be intriguing to see how Quiet will play a part in a potential season 2.
