Samoa Joe Talks Twisted Metal
Screen Rant: Congratulations on your impressive one year reign as the Ring of Honor TV Champion, Samoa Joe. As a dedicated fan, I have to say that Sweet Tooth holds a special place in my heart as an iconic character from the beloved Twisted Metal game franchise. Can you share your thoughts on the character of Sweet Tooth and what drew you to this captivating blend of thrilling action and comedy?
Samoa Joe: When it comes to Sweet Tooth, I believe it resonates with everyone, particularly those who have held a game controller in their hands during their childhood. When someone asked me, "Have you heard of Twisted Metal?" my immediate response was, "Did you own a PlayStation?" It seemed like the game was practically bundled with the system when you purchased it. [Laughs] In general, Twisted Metal, and specifically Sweet Tooth as its symbolic figure, held immense significance for me when I was growing up. So, when I was given the opportunity to bring Sweet Tooth to life, it was a decision that came effortlessly.
Similar to a professional wrestler, Sweet Tooth possesses innate showmanship. How did your background in pro wrestling contribute to highlighting Sweet Tooth's performance abilities?
Samoa Joe: I believe the primary factor was acquiring the skill to project emotions beyond the physical facade, a common practice in wrestling. From the traditional luchadores to the contemporary high-flyers, being able to convey emotions despite a seemingly expressionless face came naturally to me, particularly with this character.
What aspects did you want to bring to Sweet Tooth that weren't explicitly described?
Samoa Joe: It was challenging because Sweet Tooth is depicted with such a broad scope in the script. He exudes intimidation, unpredictability, and a consistent state of being unhinged. If anything, my goal was to channel my energy in a way that fulfills all those requirements while portraying the character.
The Twisted Metal games, as far as I can remember, lacked a substantial storyline. However, they did feature Sweet Tooth and large-scale vehicular combat consistently. What fascinated you about Michael Jonathan Smith's approach to this world?
Samoa Joe: I believe it was his ability to expand the mythology on a broader level. The tournament was always quite vague and there wasn't much consistency between the games. In fact, I would say each game felt like a snapshot from a different version of reality, particularly when we consider Black and Sweet Tooth's unique storylines—we could delve deep into the intricacies if you'd like. [Chuckling]
But, having said that, Michael possesses an extraordinary talent for constructing an entire world based on this mythology. He manages to develop a believable setting where this mind-blowing vehicular combat can take place. And I believe that's what I am most eager for fans to witness.
Without delving too deep into it, the show allows us to delve into Sweet Tooth's background. When you were researching Sweet Tooth's past, what aspect surprised you the most without giving away any spoilers?
Samoa Joe: I found it particularly fascinating to gain a deeper understanding of what motivates Sweet Tooth and to learn about Needles Kane's story, his origins, and the catalyst for his madness. It truly opened my eyes, and I believe fans will be pleasantly surprised by this intriguing piece of lore.
Joe, wrestlers are renowned for their incredible entrance music. Imagine if we were to place Somoa Joe in the exhilarating world of Twisted Metal. Which car would he select, and what song would he have on repeat?
Samoa Joe: If you ask me, my car of choice would most likely be a 1980 Toyota 4x4. I've mentioned this to a few others before, as these vehicles have a reputation for being virtually indestructible. Believe it or not, they require no oil or gas, making them perfect for a post-apocalyptic setting. You can shoot at them all you want, but they just won't go down. I've even seen third-world countries employ these sturdy machines in their armies and emerge victorious against much larger military forces.
Anthony Mackie had nothing but praise for you and thoroughly enjoyed your performance. Can you elaborate on your experience working alongside Anthony on the show?
Samoa Joe expressed that his experience working with Anthony was truly amazing. Anthony's exceptional acting skills and constant support on set made a significant impact. Adjusting to this new realm was easier with Anthony's assistance, ultimately enhancing the overall performance. The time spent shooting was enjoyable, and Samoa Joe hopes that the energy translates effectively on screen. Additionally, with CM Punk's return to AEW, Samoa Joe wonders if reigniting their rivalry would be desirable, personally expressing a keen interest in seeing it happen.

The outcome of this situation remains to be seen. The live-action TV series Twisted Metal, inspired by the beloved PlayStation game franchise, is a thrilling action comedy.
