Summary
Only Murders in the Building season 3 takes the show in a new direction by diving into the world of Broadway, a natural progression for Oliver's character.
Focusing on Broadway enables Oliver to undergo character growth and find redemption, mirroring the journeys of Charles and Mabel in previous seasons.
By keeping the show set on Broadway, it remains vibrant and has the opportunity for a lengthy and prosperous run, as proven by its impressive ratings and favorable reception.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, co-creator/executive producer John Hoffman discussed the Broadway setting of Only Murders in the Building season 3. Following the cliffhanger from season 2, the new chapter of the Hulu show follows Charles, Oliver, and Mabel as they investigate the murder of Ben on the opening night of Oliver's Broadway play. The group will delve into the cast, including Loretta, played by Meryl Streep, a struggling actor who may find her big break with the play. Hoffman explained that the Broadway-centric story aligns with Oliver's background and hinted at a broader focus on the theatrical format in upcoming episodes.
It made perfect sense to me for the storyline we are portraying in Only Murders in the Building. One of our three main characters has a strong connection to this direction, and it felt like a refreshing change for the show. However, it had to remain consistent with the overall context of our show. We didn't want it to veer off into a completely different world with its themes and everything else. On a personal level, as someone with roots in the theater, this was a thrilling opportunity for me. I have a deep love for the New York theater scene and have maintained my ties to it for many years. To have the chance to collaborate with Justin Paul and Benj Pasek, leading a talented team of composers for our season 3, was truly exciting. And the additional contributions from Sara Bareilles, Mark Shaman, Scott Whitman, and Michael R. Jackson only added to the magic. Just wait until you see it. What they have brought to the table is exceptional, and it's even more incredible to have actors who are so familiar with the stage involved in this project. It's like diving into a rich landscape while still staying true to the essence of our show. Playing in this arena is a true thrill for me.
OMITB Has Been Paving The Way For Broadway Since The First Episode
Oliver's history in Broadway has been a source of humor since the launch of Only Murders in the Building in 2021. As an ambitious director, he has constantly strived to make a comeback in his career. It was his drive, along with his love for true crime podcasts, that led to the creation of the podcast featuring Charles and Mabel, with Oliver directing their narration.
In season 2, Charles receives a new opportunity for fame alongside the podcast's success with a Brazzos revival. This sets the stage for Only Murders in the Building to explore the world of Broadway in future episodes. Initially portrayed as a joke, the decision to approach it sincerely in both the season 2 finale and the majority of season 3 allows Oliver to have a chance at redeeming his career and undergoing character growth, similar to his friends in previous seasons.
As noted by Hoffman, establishing a Broadway focus in season 3 of Only Murders in the Building serves the purpose of keeping the show appealing and new for the audience. Hoffman is optimistic about the show's future beyond season 3, believing it has the potential for a successful and long run. While the viewership numbers are currently undisclosed, Only Murders in the Building season 3 continues to maintain its exceptional performance on Rotten Tomatoes, receiving a "Certified Fresh" rating of 99% after season 1's 100% and season 2's 98%. This indicates a promising possibility for its return. Catch new episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 3 on Hulu every Tuesday!
