Once again, Hulu's Only Murders in the Building returns with a hilarious new season, following a shocking murder. Co-created by John Hoffman and Steve Martin, the series proves it can still effectively implement its successful formula, even after a busy second season that maintained its essence. Season 3 encounters some challenges, both figuratively and literally, as the story expands beyond the Arconia. Nevertheless, with a stellar cast that now includes two major A-list stars and an intriguing new mystery, the show retains its nimble nature.
The new installment of Only Murders in the Building season 2 begins with a dramatic event: world-renowned actor Ben Glenroy (played by Paul Rudd) collapses on stage during the opening night of Oliver Putnam's (portrayed by Martin Short) highly anticipated Broadway comeback. With a suspect-filled cast and a prominent victim right before them, Oliver and his podcast co-hosts/friends, Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) and Charles-Haden Savage (Martin), spot the perfect opportunity to embark on another thrilling season of their popular show. However, while Mabel eagerly dives into uncovering the truth behind Ben's murder, the others find themselves preoccupied. Oliver is consumed with the fate of his play and a blossoming romance with aspiring actress Loretta (played by Meryl Streep), while Charles grapples with his own challenges within his role in the play. Whether this trio can successfully unravel the mystery of Ben's death remains as enigmatic as the identity of the culprit.

Oliver's play, which later becomes a musical, forms the basis of Only Murders in the Building season 3. The main ensemble consists of the cast and crew, including Howard, an Arconia resident played by Michael Cyril Creighton, who has now become a series regular. This introduces a new level of mystery as virtually everyone is a stranger with hidden motives. Unfortunately, it also means that the focus shifts away from the beloved cast of characters within the Arconia. Episode 7 serves as a reminder of what has been lost this season, although credit must be given to the creative team for expanding the show's universe. Additionally, the Broadway theater setting adds an impressive backdrop to the murder mystery.
The play also benefits by giving a clear purpose to the numerous characters in Only Murders in the Building season 3. In the previous season, integrating guest stars proved challenging, but with renowned actors like Rudd and Streep joining the cast, there was a risk of repeating the same mistake. However, this time the newcomers, including Streep, Ashley Park, and Jesse Williams, are all connected to Oliver's struggling production. The production also adds complexity to the dynamics between the core trio. With Charles and Oliver preoccupied with the show, Mabel takes charge of the investigation, leading to tensions and strains in their friendship. While they have fought before, this conflict feels more urgent. Moreover, Ben's murder continues to provide plenty of twists and deceptive clues to unravel. In the final reviewed episode, episode 8, significant plot developments emerge, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to season 3.
The success of Only Murders in the Building season 3 can be attributed to the flawless chemistry among its main characters. Despite occasional separation in certain episodes, notably episode 5, Short, Martin, and Gomez brilliantly complement each other, resulting in scenes that are infused with both humor and emotion. Short once again demonstrates his versatility by effortlessly navigating between comedy and drama; his character Oliver undergoes a significant transformation in the second episode, which, although somewhat neglected afterward, significantly shapes his character development and allows Short to showcase new facets of the passionate theater director. Martin excels in his portrayal of Charles, particularly during a standout "patter song" performance that highlights his subtly nuanced comedic style. Lastly, Mabel finds herself at a pivotal point in her life, affording Gomez the opportunity to showcase her dramatic skills, highlighted by a poignant scene with a figment of Ben's memory in episode 2.
While maintaining its established formula and style from the first two seasons, Only Murders in the Building season 3 also ventures into uncharted territory by challenging its characters. Although there may be moments when the magic seems to fade, the show quickly recaptures its charm and keeps viewers engaged. From Charles' unexpected stage fright to the return of beloved characters, and the entertaining banter between Martin, Short, and Gomez, there is plenty to enjoy. With this trio at the forefront, Only Murders in the Building is practically guaranteed to maintain its winning streak.
Don't miss the premiere of Only Murders in the Building season 3 on Tuesday, August 8, exclusively on Hulu. The season consists of 10 episodes, with the first two episodes available for streaming simultaneously. Subsequent episodes will be released on a weekly basis.
