Joni Mitchell returned to the stage on Saturday, October 14, marking another milestone in her remarkable journey of recovery since experiencing a life-changing brain aneurysm in 2015. Four months after her previous headlining performance, the music legend once again captivated audiences with her timeless talent.

Mitchell, a 79-year-old musician, teamed up with Brandi Carlile, a 42-year-old country/Americana star, for a remarkable performance. The concert took place at the renowned Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, with Mitchell seated between Carlile and Annie Lennox, who was also a guest. During the performance, Mitchell contributed to three songs: "Shine" (which Rolling Stone revealed to be Carlile's favorite Joni song), "Ladies of the Canyon," and "Circle Game."

Expressing her gratitude, Carlile turned to Mitchell and said, "Joni, it brings me immense happiness to be here with you. Thank you for joining me in this. Your presence makes me feel incredibly cool. I am truly indebted to you, and I promise not to take advantage of your generosity."

Earlier in the concert, Carlile paid homage to Joni Mitchell by performing a heartfelt rendition of Mitchell's iconic song "Woodstock," which served as the closing number for the main set. The stage was arranged in a cozy and intimate manner for the encore, resembling the informal and collaborative jam sessions that Mitchell often hosts at her own home. As the stage was being prepared, Mitchell and Carlile took a moment to recount their recent trip to Mitchell's home country of Canada, which held special significance as it marked Mitchell's first visit to her native land since her health scare.

This appearance came four months after Mitchell's triumphant return to the stage at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington, where she headlined the memorable event called "Joni Mitchell's Joni Gam." This concert marked Mitchell's first major performance since recovering from her aneurysm, and it included captivating performances by Carlile, Lennox, Sarah McLachlan, Wendy and Lisa of Prince's Revolution, and Marcus Mumford.

Mitchell was discovered unconscious in her residence in March 2015. The late David Crosby revealed the news of her condition, stating that he had not personally spoken to her and that, to his knowledge, she had not regained her ability to speak. He provided reassurance that she was receiving care and was recuperating at home. Crosby described the severity of her condition, explaining that she had suffered an aneurysm and had gone unnoticed for a considerable period of time. He emphasized the challenges she would face in her recovery, comparing it to the arduous journey of recovering from a traumatic brain injury.

Mitchell, who had contracted polio at the age of nine, expressed that she viewed the experience as a precursor to the challenges she would face throughout her life. However, she acknowledged that the aneurysm had inflicted even greater setbacks, including the loss of her ability to walk and speak. While she was able to regain her speech relatively quickly, walking remained a persistent struggle for her. Nevertheless, Mitchell emphasized her resilience, noting her indomitable spirit due to her Irish heritage.

In a significant milestone, Mitchell returned to the stage in 2022 for the first time since the aneurysm. Her performance took place at the Newport Folk Festival, the very event that had played a pivotal role in launching her career back in 1967. Originally promoted as a performance by Brandi Carlile and Friends, the event ultimately became a Joni Mitchell concert, which she later released as the At Newport live album a year later.
