Michelle Yeoh has finally lifted the lid on the reason behind the lack of news on the much-anticipated sequel to Crazy Rich Asians. The movie, which was based on Kevin Kwan's novel, was a commercial and critical success, grossing $238 million at the box office with a budget of just $30 million. However, fans have been left waiting for an update on the follow-up film.
Speaking to Variety, Yeoh shed some light on the delays, saying, "They have been talking about it. I think sometimes it's hard, you know, when you have such a big success, and you go 'How do I better? And that's the biggest chip on the shoulder, is like, 'Do I make it better? Bigger? This? That? I think they are trying to find the right story. Kevin Kwan is endless with his stories."
The immense triumph of Crazy Rich Asians has set a high bar for its sequel, making it a daunting task for the filmmakers to surpass the first movie. Consequently, the progress of Crazy Rich Asians 2 has been sluggish. Nevertheless, there is still a silver lining as it indicates that the sequel is still in the works.
Will there be a follow-up to Crazy Rich Asians?
The sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, titled China Rich Girlfriend, already has a storyline mapped out, which should make turning it into a sequel a simple task. However, the movie's production has been delayed due to the departure of screenwriter Adele Lim over a pay dispute. Despite this setback, the cast, including star actor Constance Wu, is on board for a sequel. Amy Wang signed on as a replacement screenwriter in March of last year. Unfortunately, with the ongoing 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, it's unlikely that Crazy Rich Asians 2 will be able to move into production anytime soon. Despite the delay, the recent update from Michelle Yeoh confirms that the sequel is still in the works.
