It’s been reported that Matthew McConaughey will star in a sequel to Yellowstone. And while there’s no word yet on a name, it will have ‘Yellowstone’ in the title.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in March, Chris McCarthy, the head of Paramount's Media Networks, confirmed that the star would be leading a "Yellowstone extension" regardless of Kevin Costner's return to the original series. Creator Taylor Sheridan referred to the extension as a "new chapter" and expressed confidence in casting the star, calling him a "natural fit" for the raw and modern world clash depicted in the show.
Sheridan has only outlined the general concept of the spinoff, suggesting that it may not feature any of the familiar Yellowstone characters, and instead focus on a new cast and setting. In reference to the prequels 1883 and 1923, which also feature new casts, Sheridan implied that his approach to spinoffs is similar to his approach to prequels, leaving it open to interpretation.
He reaffirms his statement, saying, "Many areas where traditional lifestyles clash with modern ones, but the obstacles vary. These stories can be found in many different places." There is also uncertainty about where the spin-off fits into the larger Yellowstone timeline.
