Restoration, in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, is a magical skillset encompassing healing spells, protective wards, and the ability to repel undead creatures. While not particularly useful outside of combat scenarios, its importance becomes evident during battles.
Regrettably, the nature of Restoration magic makes it challenging to enhance one's abilities in tranquil towns or amicable environments. Nevertheless, Skyrim offers several exploitative methods that players can employ to swiftly improve their Restoration skills without the need to engage in perilous combat. All that is required is a small investment of funds and the application of a few beneficial buffs.
Items, Buffs, and Trainers
When aiming to boost Restoration quickly, it is crucial to familiarize oneself with Colette Marence. Colette is renowned as the Restoration specialist within the College of Winterhold, where each branch of magic is represented by experts. In the realm of Restoration, Colette stands alone as the sole merchant offering regular Adept and Expert-level spells. However, these spells will only become accessible to players once they have attained 40 and 65 skill points in Restoration respectively.
In addition to the diverse range of spells, Colette's inventory boasts Robes of Restoration. These robes serve a dual purpose, enhancing Magicka regeneration while reducing the cost of Restoration spells. Moreover, the selection extends to the highly coveted Master Robes of Regeneration, which become available as players progress further and their level increases. Furthermore, Colette presents players with the "Restoration Ritual Spell" quest, bestowing them with the ability to unlock Master Restoration spells upon reaching a skill level of 90.
Colette, while not the top trainer in the game, is a Restoration trainer. The complete list includes:
Aphia Velothi, a former Temple priestess residing in Raven Rock (Dragonborn expansion, training available up to level 50).
Keeper Carcette, leader of the Vigilants of Stendarr south of Dawnstar (up to 75)
Colette Marence, Restoration professor in the College of Winterhold (up to 75)
Danica Pure-Spring, priestess of Kynareth in Whiterun (must complete "The Blessings of Nature," up to 100)
Florentius Baenius, recruitable member of the Dawnguard (up to 100)
To have additional Restoration skills at the beginning, players have the option to choose an Imperial for +10 or a High Elf, Argonian, or Breton for +5.
To enhance the rate at which players gain Restoration experience, they can activate the Mage Stone for a 20 percent increase to all magic skills, the Lover Stone for a 15 percent boost to all skills, or sleep in a bed with their spouse in the same house for an extra 15 percent. Skyrim Special Edition players can combine all three benefits by equipping the Aetherial Crown from the Dawnguard expansion, enabling them to receive bonuses from both Standing Stones, and then sleeping for 8 hours with their spouse.
Speedy Strategies
In Skyrim, the amount of experience gained for Restoration healing spells is directly linked to the number of health points they restore. Casting Close Wounds to heal a small amount of health will yield less experience compared to fully restoring 100 health. While high-level healing spells are more efficient, their effectiveness is irrelevant without a consistent source of damage.
One reliable source that players can find in most towns is a forge. By standing on a forge, players will receive a minimal amount of fire damage. They can repeatedly subject themselves to this damage by jumping on the forge or walking across the fire's central point. Interestingly, this method also gradually improves Destruction skill.
Another frequent source of damage exists near High Hrothgar. If players attempt to traverse to the Throat of the World without utilizing the Clear Skies Shout, the forceful winds will persistently inflict frost damage. This proves less advantageous for players who possess resistance to frost damage, but more beneficial for those who possess resistance to fire damage.
Nevertheless, for players who possess it, the most reliable source of damage is the Equilibrium spell. The Equilibrium spell tome can be discovered in Labyrinthian, accessible only during one of the final stages of the College of Winterhold quest line. Players can locate the tome between the second and third instances of Morokei's dialogue in a room safeguarded by a lightning rune.
The Alteration spell Equilibrium allows the caster to drain their own health and convert it into magicka. While it may not enhance Alteration skill quickly, players have the ability to use Equilibrium with one hand and healing spells with the other. By having the right combination of items and a powerful Restoration spell, players can generate more magicka than they actually require, making Restoration training effortless by merely standing still and using both attack buttons.
Another method to enhance Restoration is by employing a Ward spell. Casting Wards provides more experience compared to maintaining them. To improve Restoration, players can find a harmless low-level enemy and cast Wards in short bursts of one second. However, it is important to note that the experience gained through this tactic diminishes once the skill reaches approximately 65 points.
Players have a third option: utilizing spells such as Heal Other and Grand Heal to restore the health of non-playable characters (NPCs). After completing the Civil War quest line, players can discover a basement room in either the Blue Palace in Solitude or the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm, where former Jarls reside. These individuals are considered "essential NPCs," meaning they cannot be killed by the game. To exploit this, players can cast Illusion spells like Fury or Frenzy into the crowd, provoking them to attack each other. Given that none of them can be permanently harmed, players can continuously cast healing spells while they engage in combat.
In addition, players can employ Turn Undead spells on their own undead minions to enhance their Restoration skills. Some Creation Club DLCs offer low-level undead Conjuration spells. Alternatively, players may obtain Conjure Boneman from the Soul Cairn (available in the Dawnguard DLC) or utilize Raise Zombie along with a newly acquired animal or humanoid body. It is important to note that created or conjured undead minions will not attack the player. However, it is advisable to execute this tactic in a confined environment whenever possible, as the undead may attempt to escape.
The most effective method for training Restoration is a combination of Equilibrium and a healing spell. Although it may not be the most captivating approach, it is incredibly efficient and straightforward. By simply engaging in another activity simultaneously, the Dragonborn can swiftly achieve a Restoration skill level of 100.
