Among these techniques, the pinnacle embodiment lies within the art of Shunpo, also known as the "Flash Step."
Through the utilization of this technique, Shinigami possess the ability to move at remarkable speeds, surpassing the eye's capability to perceive, thereby bewildering opponents and hindering their reaction to an impending attack. This particular movement technique plays a crucial role for members of the Onmitsukido, also referred to as the Stealth Force, belonging to the Gotei 13's 2nd Division in the world of Bleach. Indeed, notable experts in Shunpo hail from the Onmitsukido, among them the revered "Flash Goddess" herself, Yoruichi Shihoin.
What Is Shunpo?
Shunpo is primarily focused on enhancing speed, both in close quarters combat scenarios and over longer distances. The main idea behind this technique is to move from one point to another using the fewest steps possible. Taking unnecessary steps is seen as inefficient and slow, as it drains the user's energy. Intense training can help refine this technique, allowing users to maintain a high level of sharpness while using it.
Another important aspect of Shunpo is its ability to conceal movement. Viewers cannot actually see the user's transition from one point to another. To those who can't keep up, it may appear like teleportation, but it is more akin to an incredibly fast dash that is too quick to visually perceive. This enables users to seamlessly slip past opponents, surprise adversaries from behind before they can react, or eliminate large numbers of opponents in the blink of an eye.
Hence, it is ideal for covert operations where Shinigami need to pass by enemies without being noticed, as it can also be utilized over long distances. This makes it crucial for agents in the Onimtsukido, with many of them demonstrating exceptional skill in its use. Additionally, the Arrancar possess their own variation of the technique called Sonido, while the Quincy's version is referred to as Hirenkyaku.
Faster Than The Eye Can See
Within the subcategory of Shunpo, there exist varying schools of thought on its application, accompanied by distinct maneuvers crafted by different Shinigami to complement their individual combat styles. The Way of Onmitsu, the third sect of the Shihō, serves as an advanced class of techniques employed by both Yoruichi Shihoin and Byakuya Kuchiki. Noteworthy among these techniques is Utsusemi, wherein a user rapidly evades an incoming assault, leaving behind a convincing façade of having endured damage. Byakuya further employs Senka, a technique that enables him to swiftly position himself behind an adversary, striking at both their Saketsu (Chain of Fate) and Sakusui (Soul Sleep) in quick succession, effectively incapacitating them within moments.
Shunpo also finds noteworthy application in the creation of multiple after images called Speed Clones. Sui-Feng, the current Commander-in-Chief of the Onimtsukido and the Captain of the 2nd Division in the Gotei 13, demonstrated this technique during her battle against Sosuke Aizen in the battle of Fake Karakura Town. She successfully generated 15 clones that flawlessly replicated her movements, making them indistinguishable from her true self. However, the clones did not endure for long.
In addition, Tenjiro Kirinji, a distinguished member of the Royal Guard, earned the moniker "Lightning-Fast Tenjiro" during his time in Soul Society due to his extraordinary proficiency in Shunpo. His speed surpasses that of Sui-Feng, as he was able to swiftly transition from standing directly in front of her to restraining her from behind without even eliciting a reaction. Kisuke Urahara, who received training from Yoruichi during his early years, also boasts considerable skill in Shunpo. He was able to keep pace with her for brief intervals during their sparring sessions, a feat that commands noteworthy admiration.
The Power Of The Flash Goddess
Other notable masters of Shunpo are Sosuke Aizen and the Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13, Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto. Aizen's expertise in utilizing Shunpo allowed him to swiftly approach adversaries and eliminate them before they could react. Shinigami often found themselves unaware of Aizen's attacks when facing him due to his extraordinary speed. Yamamoto, on the other hand, demonstrated immense skill in Shunpo by surpassing his students Jushiro Ukitake and Shunsui Kyoraku in a speed test, reaching their destination before either of them could comprehend his method of arrival.
However, it is widely acknowledged that none of these Shunpo users, with the exception of Tenjiro Kirinji, can rival the speed and expertise displayed by Yoruichi. Whether it is in terms of swiftness or adeptness in utilizing this technique in various scenarios, Yoruichi Shihoin stands alone. She is unanimously revered as the fastest individual during her prime in Soul Society and the fastest in all of history. Her mastery of Shunpo is truly astonishing, as she effortlessly decimated an entire squadron of the Onmitsukido within a matter of seconds.
She possesses the ability to be present in multiple locations simultaneously and surpass even highly skilled individuals like Byakuya Kuchiki. Yoruichi has not only mastered all of the Onmitsukido's techniques related to speed but also devised her own variations that enhance their effectiveness. While the full extent of her abilities remains unknown, she was able to match and slightly surpass her former pupil Sui-Feng's speed, despite not practicing for nearly a century. As a result, Yoruichi is considered the most proficient user of Shunpo in Soul Society and the entire Bleach universe, which is why she is highly respected in the Gotei 13.
