Defeating Alan
In the climactic battle of Alan Wake 2, both of the game's main characters will engage in a fierce struggle to gain control over the Clicker, a powerful device that can manipulate reality. To successfully defeat the Dark Presence residing within Alan, players must skillfully employ a combination of tactics utilized in two previous boss fights.
After players finish performing the summoning ritual, a cutscene will be triggered if they have already completed Alan's story Initiation. In this cutscene, Saga will assemble the last fragments of the puzzle because Alan is absent after the ritual. Saga will disclose to players that Alan managed to escape from the Dark Place and clarify that Mr. Scratch is not a mere creation of the Dark Presence, but rather Alan possessed by its power. Subsequently, Alan will manifest on the beach, initiating an assault on Saga, which marks the commencement of the ultimate battle.
The battle with Alan presents a combination of the fights against Mr. Scratch near the Sheriff's Station and the Ritual Summoning battle. While players won't encounter hordes of Taken on the beach, Alan himself poses a formidable challenge to Saga and the players. Similar to the encounter with Mr. Scratch, players must position a set of lights to dispel the Dark Presence, this time in an effort to sever its connection to Alan.
There are only two lights that need to be adjusted, and they are already on. Players simply need to rotate the lights to align their beams with the cage designed to trap and destroy shadows. Alan will aggressively attack Saga, using teleportation leaps and powerful melee strikes, reminiscent of the fight with Scratch. Additionally, he will release dark energy pulses in a wide radius around him. Evading Alan's lunges and swipes can be done effectively, but avoiding the dark energy pulses proves to be difficult, as they can pass through or around obstacles. It's therefore recommended to have painkillers readily available and easily accessible in order to swiftly restore health if caught in one of these shockwaves.
To temporarily stun Wake, players should focus on dealing as much damage as possible. Then, they need to interact with the lighting arrays to align them with the cage. Engage the alignment process by holding the interact button, and when Alan audibly calms down, it's time to resume the assault. Release the interact button and switch back to evading attacks and shooting. Don't worry about completing the alignment in one go as progress will be saved even if interrupted by an attack from Alan.
During the combat, players can try using the flashlight to slow down Alan, although its effectiveness is minimal. Agent Estevez from the Federal Bureau of Control will occasionally illuminate Alan with a spotlight, which will decelerate his approach towards Saga. Players should seize these opportunities to launch precise headshot attacks with the crossbow or hunting rifle, or alternatively, they can engage in close combat using a fully-loaded pump-action shotgun to unleash devastating blasts. When Alan ceases his advancement and begins absorbing the surrounding dark energy, players should swiftly make their way to the nearest fixture and exploit this moment to make considerable progress.
If players are running low on ammunition, they should scan the cliffs below where Estevez and Casey are stationed. Occasionally, a supply box containing ammunition and healing items will be dropped there. In addition, there is a shoebox available in the arena during the fight. It can be found on the far side, near where Alan is initially standing. It's worth noting that accessing the shoebox does not impact the world around Saga, and Alan can still attack and kill her.
It's important to maintain the strategy of damaging and stunning Alan, as well as aligning the lights in between, until both lights are properly positioned. Once both lights are set, players should position themselves in the cage and lure Alan into the light. When Alan enters the cage with Saga, a cutscene will initiate, concluding the part and ending the fight.
