In central Paris on Thursday, a large number of protesters defied a recent ban on pro-Palestinian rallies in France. Videos revealed that French police and gendarmerie officers used tear gas and water cannons to scatter the gathering.
The ban on pro-Palestinian demonstrations was announced earlier in the day by French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin to the country's police, stating concerns about public order. The minister emphasized that these protests would not be permitted as they had the potential to disrupt public order. He also warned that anyone organizing such demonstrations would face arrest.
Darmanin further urged the police to ensure the safety of all venues frequented by the Jewish community in France, including synagogues and schools. He emphasized that any foreign individual found guilty of perpetrating anti-Semitic acts on French territory will face immediate deportation.

Gaza crisis escalates amidst intense bombardment as Israel retaliates against the atrocities committed by Hamas. The ban comes in response to a devastating and large-scale assault initiated by the militant group on Israel, which resulted in the loss of over 1,200 lives.
The Israeli government has responded with excessive force in Gaza, a coastal enclave controlled by Hamas. Airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 individuals in this densely populated area, exacerbating the situation further. Additionally, Israeli officials have cut off the supply of water and fuel to the entire population.
As the conflict escalates to unparalleled levels, global protests have emerged in solidarity with both Israelis and Palestinians, some of which have unfortunately led to violent confrontations.
French President Emmanuel Macron urged the French population to remain united, emphasizing that "it is through this shield of unity that we defend against division and hatred."

Protestors chant as they gather at Place de la Republique on October 12, 2023.
Demonstrators gathered in the iconic Place de la Republique on Thursday, expressing their support for Palestine through whistles, applause, and chants in French, such as "We stand united for Palestine" and "Palestine's resilience will endure."
One attendee named Ryan informed Reuters that the prohibition of pro-Palestinian rallies is "unlawful" and contrary to normal legal practices.
"In France, a country esteemed for its greatness, the right to freely demonstrate is no longer honored. Regrettably, freedom no longer prevails, compelling us to challenge French legislation and stage demonstrations to convey the truth," he expressed.
A different protester expressed the ban as a "severe injustice" and informed Reuters that he was charged a fine of 135 euros (approximately $140) for donning the keffiyeh, a customary Palestinian scarf.
Concerns about retaliation towards Jewish communities have led to heightened security measures in France, as well as other European countries like the United Kingdom and Germany.
