Chelsea reject second £50m bid from Man United for Mason Mount as negotiations persist Mount, with only a year left on his contract, shows no signs of signing new terms Stay updated on the summer transfer window with Sky Sports

Chelsea have rejected a second bid from Manchester United for midfielder Mason Mount.

The second offer is understood to be worth £50m - £45m guaranteed plus £5m in performance-related add-ons.

United are keen on securing the services of the English national, however, they have set a specific valuation that they are unlikely to exceed. The discussions regarding Mount's transfer are anticipated to persist, considering that he only has one year remaining on his contract with Chelsea.

We News reported earlier this month United had made an opening offer worth £40m for Mount, which Chelsea also immediately knocked back.

Why Man Utd want Mount

Mount, who originally came through the Chelsea academy, caught the attention of Erik ten Hag during his time as Ajax head coach. During a loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem, the talented 18-year-old played a crucial role in his team's victory over Ajax, with his free-kick leading to their third goal in a thrilling 3-2 win in March 2018.

Mount caught the attention of Ten Hag, who was then only managing his eighth game at Ajax, after an impressive first full season in senior football. Ten Hag reportedly attempted to secure Mount on loan from Chelsea for the following season, as the young midfielder showcased his abilities with 14 goals and 10 assists primarily from a central midfield position.

Given Mount's reluctance to sign a new contract, it seems highly unlikely that he will remain at Stamford Bridge. With just one year left on his current deal, Chelsea are aware that now is the opportune moment to capitalize on the player's value and make a sale.

Ten Hag, it seems, could be about to get his man.

Has Man Utd's Shaw spoken to Mount?

During England duty earlier this month, Luke Shaw, the Manchester United defender, was directly questioned about the potential of Mount joining his club. Shaw and England manager Gareth Southgate shared a light-hearted moment, joking about how players have been engaging in informal discussions during the June international break, which conveniently aligns with the opening of the transfer window.

Mount is among the players I have had conversations with regarding a potential move," Shaw humorously remarked. "Although he is not present at the moment, it's all in good spirits. We often engage in playful banter and share a laugh about it."
