One overlooked storyline from Phase 2 of the MCU will play a crucial role in Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion series, as it finally uncovers the decade-long mystery introduced in Iron Man 3. In episode 2 of Secret Invasion, titled "Promises," which premiered on Disney+ on June 28, 2023, more details about Gravik and the Skrull rebellion's plans are revealed. The series teases the development of the "Super Skrulls," bringing back forgotten storylines from the MCU's history, including one that brings closure to a mystery that has rarely been mentioned in the past decade, dating back to Iron Man 3 in 2013.
The character Super Skrull first appeared in Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four #18 in 1963. Kl'rt, a decorated Skrull warrior, was imbued with the powers of Marvel's First Family. Although the Fantastic Four won't make their MCU debut until 2025, the trailers for Secret Invasion hinted at the presence of Super Skrull. Marvel Studios cleverly redesigned the abilities of the Skrull warrior to account for their absence, resulting in exciting nods to characters like Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, the Frost Beast from Thor: The Dark World, and Cull Obsidian from the Black Order. However, Iron Man 3 presented the ideal replacement for the abilities of the Human Torch.
Secret Invasion Finally Gave Extremis Closure In The MCU
The Skrull rebellion in the MCU's Super Skrull seems to have obtained Extremis, an advanced genetic manipulation technique introduced in Iron Man 3. Extremis, developed by Maya Hansen and Aldrich Killian using nanotechnology, initially aimed to aid healing and regeneration in humans. However, Killian misused it to create super soldiers, transforming himself into the Mandarin and even exposing Pepper Potts to Extremis, until Tony Stark found a cure for her.
Utilizing complex metabolic processes, Extremis users can generate immense heat, often resulting in bodily instability and explosions. This makes Extremis a potentially perfect substitute for the Human Torch's powers in the MCU's Super Skrull. Its return in Secret Invasion episode 2 concludes the Extremis mystery from Iron Man 3, which had not been seen since Phase 2, except for a brief appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Secret Invasion is expected to give Extremis a more significant role.
How The Super Skrulls Got Hold Of Extremis In Secret Invasion
Extremis' presence in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings indicates that the serum is still widely available in the MCU. Considering the Skrulls' ability to disguise themselves, it is likely that they have obtained Extremis. Sonya Falsworth's use of Extremis to torture a Skrull suggests that MI6 has access to it. Additionally, it can be assumed that Tony Stark's Department of Damage Control possesses stocks of Extremis, considering his previous encounter with it in Iron Man 3 and his successful cure for Pepper Potts. If the Skrull rebellion had infiltrated any of these organizations during Secret Invasion, they could have significant reserves of Extremis at their disposal.
