Warning: This post contains spoilers for episode 1, "Resurrection" of Secret Invasion.
The thrilling conclusion of episode 1 of Secret Invasion had been hinted at by a Marvel Studios antagonist in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Secret Invasion, part of Phase 5, finally debuted on Disney+ on June 21, 2023, with the return of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury to Earth to confront the imminent danger posed by a faction of rebellious Skrulls capable of shape-shifting, led by the sinister Gravik. While episode 2 of Secret Invasion hinted at a more fantastical element of Gravik's plan, the series premiere focused on a realistic bomb plot, which could be considered one of the most intense moments in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this may have already been foreshadowed.
Captain America: The Winter Solder Predicted A Dirty Bomb Attack In Moscow
Throughout "Resurrection," the first episode of Secret Invasion, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Talos were made aware of the Skrull rebellion's intentions. They discovered that Gravik planned to detonate a bomb in a Russian plaza and falsely implicate the group Americans Against Russia, with the aim of escalating tensions and creating global instability. The Skrulls, being immune to radiation, hoped that if the United States and Russia were to engage in nuclear warfare, it would result in the end of humanity, thus allowing the Skrulls to take over Earth as their new home. The premiere of Secret Invasion concluded with Gravik, portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir, successfully setting off a bomb in Moscow's Vossoyedineniye Square, potentially fulfilling a prediction made almost a decade earlier. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Phase 2, the collapse of SHIELD occurred after HYDRA's infiltration of the security organization was exposed. Alexander Pierce, portrayed by Robert Redford, who served as the Secretary of the World Security Council, was revealed to be one of the key figures in HYDRA. It becomes even more concerning when considering that Pierce may have anticipated the attack that ultimately ended the first episode of Secret Invasion. When confronted by Nick Fury, Pierce suggested that HYDRA's enemies were also enemies of SHIELD, stating, "Disorder. War. It's only a matter of time before a dirty bomb detonates in Moscow or an EMP incapacitates Chicago."
Why Secret Invasion's Bomb Scene Is So Brutal
In Secret Invasion episode 2, it was revealed that the bomb attack in Vossoyedineniye Square resulted in the deaths of approximately 2000 civilians. While this number may seem relatively small compared to previous destructive events in the MCU's history, the way in which this moment was portrayed, focusing on the panic, turmoil, and loss experienced by civilians, made it one of the most brutal moments in MCU. Unlike other scenes where superheroes offer hope and lightness, this moment only involved Fury, Hill, and Talos, who were all shocked by the tragedy.
Given the passage of time in the MCU, Nick Fury may not recall the line spoken by Alexander Pierce in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With numerous responsibilities at hand, this event may not be at the forefront of his memory. However, the fact that HYDRA's prediction was realized raises the unsettling possibility that their intentions might not have been entirely evil, which is a chilling thought. The traumatic explosion at the end of Secret Invasion episode 1 was not the only shocking event, as Maria Hill was murdered by Gravik shortly thereafter, solidifying him as a genuine villain in Phase 5 of the MCU. As Secret Invasion progresses, the situation is expected to worsen.
