Summary
Marvel fans are criticizing the new Loki season 2 poster, comparing Tom Hiddleston's appearance to a Hot Toys figure.
Mocked by certain users, Loki's graphic design comes under fire for an excessive amount of editing, resulting in his face appearing less human. Consequently, these unfavorable responses towards the poster have kickstarted heated discussions and widespread online chatter regarding the forthcoming season, with the potential to draw in a larger audience.
The release of the new Loki season 2 poster has generated a negative response among Marvel fans. Comparisons have been made between the image of Tom Hiddleston and a Hot Toys figure of his Marvel Cinematic Universe character. With the premiere of Loki season 2 on Disney+ just around the corner, the marketing campaign for this MCU show is in full swing. A trailer and a few posters have been released, but the latest poster from Marvel Studios and Disney+ has received mixed feedback. Today, Marvel revealed a new poster for Loki season 2, showcasing Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the mischievous Loki. The poster displays Loki in one of the outfits previously revealed in other posters and in the trailer. It also includes the recently announced earlier release date of October 5. Take a look at the poster below.
However, Hiddleston's appearance on the poster has elicited questions and some playful ribbing from Marvel fans.
ImSheWhoRemains, a user, photoshopped a wide smile on Loki from the season 2 poster. They also expressed a plea to Marvel and compared it to a Hot Toys figure, stating, "Marvel, please ensure fair compensation for your graphic designers as he resembles a Hot Toys figure."
In the meantime, zodrawsthings, a graphic designer, showcased their skills and offered to help make individuals appear less like eyebrow-less demonic entities. They expressed their willingness to assist with future Marvel projects.
Another user, cuntyloki, raised concerns about Marvel's ability to alter Tom Hiddleston's appearance to the extent that he no longer looks human, despite his naturally attractive features. They suggested that Marvel should allow him to maintain his wrinkles.
In contrast, fanaticjustforu took a different stance and shared a reaction video of Keke Palmer expressing her unfamiliarity with Hiddleston, remarking that the poster had modified his face to the point of being unrecognizable.
Sophdesto expressed, "they treated my boy unfairly," while sharing a picture of Hiddleston making a heinous expression, seemingly suppressing his laughter.
User hammerings straightforwardly questioned, "what kind of editing is this, girl?"
Another fan, lokvnt, compared the poster to a piece of season 1 artwork, possibly the President Loki character poster, and described the character's appearance as resembling a wax figure, stating, "he looks like he came straight from the Madame Tussauds museum."
Lastly, user loki_loves_you_ commented on the poster's graphic design, suggesting that Marvel should start paying their graphic designers properly.
Why Tom Hiddleston Looks Like That On The Loki Season 2 Poster
There could be several reasons why Hiddleston appears heavily edited on the Loki season 2 poster. One possibility is that Hiddleston's character, Loki, is supposed to be ageless, while the actor himself has been portraying the role for over ten years. While Hiddleston still looks great, it is natural for him to look slightly different from when he first played Loki in 2011's Thor. The retouching on the Loki season 2 poster could be an attempt to make Hiddleston resemble his younger self.
Another explanation could be that the editing choice was a deliberate stylistic decision by Disney, Marvel, or the artists/designers involved. Just like how The Flash movie director, Andy Muschietti, defended certain stylistic CGI choices in his film, it is possible that the Loki season 2 poster aimed to create a specific artistic look. However, it may be more challenging to justify such a style choice when it comes to a poster prominently featuring the face of the main star. Nonetheless, the style of the Loki season 2 poster does bear some resemblance to the posters of Star Wars' Ahsoka show, particularly last week's Anakin poster showcasing Hayden Christensen.
It is uncertain whether either of these is the true reason. It is doubtful that Disney or Marvel will address the negative feedback on the Loki season 2 poster or explain why Hiddleston's appearance is different. However, the poster has achieved its purpose by generating conversation about the upcoming Marvel show. With only two weeks until the premiere, it is hoped that the online discussion will encourage more people to watch the series when it returns.
Don't miss the premiere of Loki season 2 on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 9pm ET/6pm PT on Disney+.
