Margot Robbie, who made a big impact in cinema last year with Barbie, is eager to step away from the spotlight.
When discussing the 2023 film landscape, it's impossible to overlook Barbie and its leading lady, Margot Robbie.
Margot Robbie has risen as a star in the past decade, with standout roles in films such as Suicide Squad, The Wolf of Wall Street, and I, Tonya. In addition to her acting career, she has ventured into producing, notably spearheading the production of the upcoming Barbie movie.
Looking towards the future, Robbie plans to shift her focus to producing and reduce her acting commitments, citing concerns about public perception as her motivation.
Margot Robbie worries that the public is “sick” of her
In a recent interview with Deadline, Margot Robbie revealed her plans to take a brief hiatus from acting. She mentioned that she has not accepted a new role in over a year, as she believes people might be tired of seeing her after the success of the Barbie movie.
"It's been over a year since I last worked on a set, bar filming for Barbie in October of 2022," Robbie shared. "Aside from Covid, this is the longest break I've had from acting. I imagine everyone's had enough of me for the time being. I should probably take a break from the screen. If I were to do another movie too soon, people would likely say, 'Her again? We just had a whole summer with her. We're tired of it.' I'm not sure what my next move will be, but I hope it's some time away."
An actor can become overexposed, as seen with the criticism X (formerly Twitter) faced when Chris Pratt landed another voice acting role. With the success of the Barbie movie, it's understandable that Robbie may be concerned about facing the same fate. However, social media has responded to reassure that this is not the case. Robbie's recent break calls into question several projects she has been attached to since 2022, including the Ocean’s Eleven prequel.
"It's still in development," she stated. "The word got out about it, but we didn't release anything because it's way too soon, to be honest. Whether it ends up being the next thing, I'm not sure. I don't think so. It's a pretty big project to put together, and there are certain logistical things that we have to time it around."
Meanwhile, Robbie is dedicated to producing projects through her company, LuckyChap Entertainment. The next project in line is Olivia Wilde's Christmas comedy titled Naughty. Robbie stated, "As a company, we have a film with Olivia Wilde, which is progressing rapidly, so that may be the next project we work on. I won't be acting in it, just producing. Additionally, a couple of television projects are set to move forward this year. As an actress, I enjoy working on projects that I'm not producing, so I'm considering a few options, although nothing is finalized at this time."
Editor's P/S
As a devoted fan of Margot Robbie, I am both understanding and supportive of her decision to take a break from acting. Her concerns about overexposure are valid, and I believe it is a wise move to step away from the spotlight for a while. Robbie's talent and versatility have made her one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, and it is easy to see why audiences might feel saturated with her presence. By taking a break, she can recharge and come back even stronger, ensuring that her future projects continue to captivate and excite fans.
Robbie's dedication to her craft and her commitment to producing projects through her company, LuckyChap Entertainment, further demonstrate her passion for the industry. I am excited to see what she accomplishes behind the scenes and look forward to the upcoming projects she has in the pipeline. While I will miss seeing her on screen for a while, I am confident that her hiatus will only serve to enhance her career and make her future performances even more memorable.
