MAPPA's Transformations: Jujutsu Kaisen Characters with Altered Eye Colors

Some faces in the Jujutsu Kaisen character lineup have undergone minor changes, including eye color, to better suit the story and characters as envisioned by author Gege Akutami and brought to life by animation studio MAPPA. While eye color may seem like a small detail, it can carry significant meaning and reflect the character's personality, as the eyes are often considered to be the "windows to the soul."

1) Megumi Fushiguro

Megumi Fushiguro, a key character in the series, underwent a slight cosmetic transformation. In the original manga, author Gege Akutami depicted him with green eyes.

2) Mei Mei

Nevertheless, in the anime adaptation, the studio decided to make a small alteration by changing his eye color to dark blue. This adjustment was made to better suit his character's appearance and to align with the storyline.

Mei Mei, a Grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer, underwent a minor change in the anime adaptation. While her eyes were originally intended to be brown in the manga, MAPPA modified them to be lilac in the anime. This alteration aligns with her character, as the color lilac symbolizes youthfulness, something she takes pride in.

3) Toji Fushiguro

She operated independently and solely for financial gain, occasionally involving herself in Jujutsu High. She also served as the senpai of Gojo Satoru and Suguru Geto during their time as students.

It may appear somewhat unconventional to certain enthusiasts, but even the flawless depiction of Toji Fushiguro underwent a minor alteration. His son, the Sorcerer Killer, was originally intended to have piercing green eyes, but MAPPA opted to give him deep blue eyes, similar to Megumi.

Despite having no Cursed Energy, Toji is regarded as one of the most powerful sorcerers due to his impressive assassination record and being the first to bypass Gojo's Infinity and inflict serious injuries on him.

4) Shoko Ieiri

The character Shoko Ieiri in Jujutsu Kaisen (Image via MAPPA) plays a supporting role in the series and is a crucial force in recovery. With her possession of the Reverse Cursed Technique and extensive medical knowledge, she stands out as a valuable asset to Jujutsu High. Her ability to utilize positive energy on others sets her apart, making her an indispensable member of the team.

While Gege imagined her with black eyes in the manga, when animated, the studio went with brown to match her changed hair color as well.

5) Toge Inumaki

Toge Inumaki stands out as a classmate of Maki Zenin, Yuta Okkotsu, and Panda in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. As a Semi-Grade 1 sorcerer, he has mastered the unique Cursed Speech technique inherited from his clan, using it in a distinctive manner to avoid cursing others.

6) Yuki Tsukumo

By harnessing Cursed Energy, he is able to imbue his words with a commanding presence that compels others to obey. However, the more forceful the command, the greater the strain on his body. As a consequence, his once brown eyes transformed into a deep shade of violet.

Yuki Tsukumo is one of the four Special Grade Jujutsu Sorcerers. She has decided to distance herself from Jujutsu High due to her disagreement with the higher-ups' methods. Instead, she operates independently with the goal of creating a world free from curses.

She was created with pink-colored eyes, which turned out well in the manga. However, in the animation, the studio decided to alter it to brown, giving her a more Westen look.

7) Suguru Geto

A former student of Jujutsu High, Suguru Geto trained alongside Gojo Satoru and Shoko Ieiri under Masamichi Yaga. However, his time as a sorcerer fueled a deep hatred for non-sorcerers, culminating in a tragic event where he brutally slaughtered hundreds of innocent civilians in a single night. As a result, he was eventually expelled and earned the reputation of being the most dangerous and malevolent of all sorcerers.

He was initially envisioned with purple-colored eyes, giving him a unique appearance unlike anyone else. However, MAPPA ultimately decided that brown eyes would better suit his gentle nature.

As a hard fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I am impressed by MAPPA's attention to detail in adapting the characters from the manga to the anime. The subtle changes in eye colors add depth and personality to the characters, making them more relatable and visually appealing. For instance, Megumi Fushiguro's dark blue eyes convey a sense of mystery and determination, while Mei Mei's lilac eyes reflect her youthful spirit and independence.

Moreover, I appreciate MAPPA's willingness to deviate from the original manga designs in order to better capture the essence of the characters. Toji Fushiguro's deep blue eyes, for example, align perfectly with his formidable presence and assassin skills, while Shoko Ieiri's brown eyes complement her warm and caring nature. These seemingly minor adjustments demonstrate MAPPA's commitment to creating a visually stunning and faithful adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen, which is a testament to their respect for the source material and their dedication to delivering a high-quality anime experience to fans.
