Josko Gvardiol is set to undergo a medical examination with Manchester City before the week concludes, following the club's completion of a deal for the RB Leipzig centre-back. A transfer fee of €90m (£77.6m) has been agreed upon by the clubs.
The deal does not break the previous defender transfer record set by Manchester United in 2019 when they paid £80m for Harry Maguire. However, considering fluctuations in exchange rates and inflation, Manchester City is only spending a slightly higher amount compared to the £75m fee that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.
Gvardiol, a highly regarded left-footed centre-back from Croatia, is considered to be one of the top players in his position in Europe. Last year, there was significant interest from elite clubs such as Chelsea and Tottenham, both eager to secure his signature.

Charting rise of Leipzig defender Gvardiol
Josko Gvardiol experienced contrasting encounters with Manchester City in the Champions League last season, showcasing his goal-scoring abilities in one instance, while enduring a humbling defeat at the Etihad in another.
In the initial match of the last-16 tie, the Croatian defender, known for wearing a mask in the World Cup, demonstrated why he is considered one of the most highly-regarded young defenders in the world at the age of 21, sought after by top European clubs. His impressive defensive performance was highlighted by a remarkable header that resulted in an equalizer for his German team.
A few weeks later, RB Leipzig suffered a devastating 7-0 defeat in Manchester, unable to counter the phenomenal skills of the five-goal scorer, Erling Haaland. This defeat undoubtedly served as a humbling experience for Gvardiol. However, it might also serve as additional motivation for him to strive for the pinnacle of his profession.
