Maggie Smith, the revered Academy Award-winning actress and dame, is renowned for her multifaceted roles and contributions. Beyond her talents in the entertainment industry, she has also dedicated herself to philanthropic endeavors. In addition to her roles as a mother and grandmother, Smith has recently ventured into the world of fashion modeling.
The 88-year-old star of Harry Potter, Smith, has been chosen as the new face of Loewe's latest campaign, which showcases the brand's upcoming spring/summer 2024 collection. On Tuesday, October 24, Loewe's Creative Director, Jonathan Anderson, shared a series of photographs on Instagram, featuring Smith as she posed against a brick wall.
In the first image, Smith is seated on a pink, red, black, and blue zig zag print sofa, donning a stylish white and black dress. With a burgundy Loewe purse in hand, she proudly exhibits a chunky gold ring. Her short gray hair is elegantly swept to the side as she gazes seriously into the camera.

Smith is depicted in the following photo standing before the same brick wall. However, this time around, they wear a warm smile, donning an impressively large fur coat with a striking two-tone design. Additionally, they hold a Loewe purse in a striking forest green shade. In the subsequent image, Smith's smile remains captivating, now clad in an exquisite long sleeve silk dress in a stunning navy blue hue. They also carry a Loewe leather tote bag in a delicate light brown shade. Interestingly, what makes these images even more remarkable is Smith's apparent lack of makeup, evident in each and every one of them.
Fans and celebrities flooded the comments section with their enthusiasm. Dan Levy, known for his role in Schitt's Creek, expressed his disbelief by commenting, "Are you kidding me?" Murray Bartlett, the actor from The White Lotus, added, "This is incredibly magnificent. LOVE."
The campaign was captured by Juergen Teller, an acclaimed German fashion photographer. Teller has a remarkable track record of photographing fashion campaigns that showcase unconventional icons.
Smith's latest ad campaign with Loewe evokes memories of the equally iconic photoshoot that Teller captured of the late Joan Didion for Céline in 2015. At the age of 80, Didion gracefully posed for the cameras, sporting her signature oversized sunglasses - an accessory she was seldom seen without throughout her illustrious career as a novelist, essayist, and reporter.
Smith and Didion's advertising campaigns elicit comparable emotions. Witnessing a revered and experienced artist unexpectedly grace a haute couture ad campaign ignites exhilaration. It communicates the brand's devotion to and attentiveness towards contemporary culture, while also paying homage to the artist and her achievements. Ultimately, it serves as a resounding affirmation that talent and diligence endure as timeless virtues.
