Given the overwhelmingly positive reception, it was almost inevitable that Blumhouse would approve a sequel for M3GAN, especially considering the uncertain fate she faced in the first film. Here's what we know about M3GAN 2.0 so far.

M3GAN 2.0: Is there a release date?

In an announcement, the studio confirmed that the movie will release on January 17, 2025.

Variety dubbed it the "beginning of the M3GAN cinematic universe," and the doll playfully responded with a photo of M3GAN holding the Infinity Gauntlet, a nod to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It looks like there are now two MCUs in town!

M3GAN 2.0: Who is in the cast?

The stars of the original movie, Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, are both signed on to return in M3GAN 2.0, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Allison Williams expressed her excitement for the sequel, stating "I absolutely loved it. I feel like it will be hard for me now to be in a movie where I’m not also producing because I just love all the details. I find it all fascinating and wonderful." Additionally, screenwriter Akela Cooper will be returning to write the sequel. While director Gerald Johnson is not yet slated to return, sources from The Hollywood Reporter say that "producers hope to make a deal with him."

The plot of M3GAN 2.0 is currently undisclosed, as the screenplay is still in development. With the original M3GAN doll seemingly destroyed at the conclusion of the first installment, it remains uncertain whether the sequel will entail a revival of the original doll or the transfer of M3GAN's consciousness into a different doll.

With both Williams and McGraw set to return, it appears that M3GAN is gearing up for payback against Gemma and Cady, possibly aiming to reunite with her best friend. Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum revealed at CinemaCon in April 2023 that, despite not sharing plot specifics, he is confident that M3GAN has a bright future ahead of her.

He informed the audience that he hoped to see numerous M3GANs in the future. By November 2023, there have been hints about more details of the plot. For instance, during an interview with Empire Magazine (via Collider), Wan disclosed that he plans to emphasize the AI anxiety aspect more: "It's still in the early stages, but M3GAN is making a significant comeback. The first film arrived at a critical time [when worries about AI were increasing], and we are certainly delving deeper into that in the next installment. We are expanding the AI universe even more."

As a hard fan of the first M3GAN movie, I am thrilled to hear about the upcoming sequel, M3GAN 2.0. The first movie was a perfect blend of horror and camp, and I can't wait to see what the sequel has in store.
