Some high ranking police officials in Louisville, Kentucky, are worried that the felony charge against golfer Scottie Scheffler may be too severe. A source familiar with the discussions told CNN that Scheffler allegedly attempted to drive around the scene of a fatal crash, leading to concerns from the officials.
This marks the first sign that certain top officials at the Louisville Metro Police Department are considering the possibility of reducing the charges against Scheffler.
The 27-year-old golfer was on his way to Valhalla Golf Club at 6 a.m. on May 17 when he encountered a fatal crash. Unfortunately, he ended up injuring a police officer who was directing traffic. He was detained and later arrested by the police.
According to Jefferson County court records, Scheffler faced charges of felony second-degree assault on a police officer, as well as lesser charges including third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from traffic-directing officers. Despite his arrest, he was eventually released from jail and made it back to the golf course in time for his tee time.
During a recent meeting, several Louisville police officials talked about the charges against Scheffler. They all agreed that the felony charge seems too much based on the case details, as shared by a source who was at the meeting.
It is not known if they have shared these opinions with the county attorney handling the case and how it might impact the final charging decision.
CNN has reached out to the Louisville Metro Police Department for comment.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
Editor's P/S:
The potential reduction of charges against Scottie Scheffler raises concerns about the severity of the initial felony charge. While it is understandable that officials are considering the details of the case, it is crucial to ensure that justice is served for the injured police officer and for the family of the victim in the fatal crash. Balancing the severity of the alleged offense with the circumstances of the incident is essential.
Furthermore, it is important to address the potential conflict of interest within the Louisville Metro Police Department. If top officials are publicly expressing concerns about the charges against a high-profile figure, it is essential to examine whether their opinions are influenced by external factors or by a desire to protect their own reputation. The integrity of the justice system depends on the impartial and unbiased application of the law to all individuals, regardless of their status or connections.
