Charges against pro golfer Scottie Scheffler have not been dropped following his arrest on the morning of the PGA Championship.

During a press conference on Thursday, May 23, Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg stated, “We have to respect the legal process and that’s what we are going to do. We’re going to let that play out. We want to move forward [and] Mr. Scheffler has made it clear that he wants to move forward and I know that everyone else involved at LMPD wants to move forward.”

Greenberg emphasized the importance of Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) focusing on reducing violent crime and gun violence in the city. Their main goal is to protect and ensure the safety of the community, a task they carry out diligently every day. This commitment was evident last Friday when they were actively working at Valhalla and on Shelbyville Road, and it will remain their priority moving forward.

Greenberg also mentioned that law enforcement officials will continue to respect and adhere to the legal process in their future actions.

“I’m very hopeful that on June 3rd, the next step in the legal process, that all parties involved are in a position to move forward,” the mayor concluded.

An attorney for Scheffler, 27, meanwhile, insisted that they plan to diligently fight the allegations.

Scottie Scheffler's attorney, Steve Romines, stated to CNN that his client did nothing wrong and they are not looking to settle the case. They will either go to trial or have the case dismissed. Romines emphasized that all the evidence supports Scheffler's claim that it was a chaotic situation and a miscommunication, with no wrongdoing on his part.

It was confirmed on May 17 that Scheffler was arrested by the Louisville Metro Police before round 2 of the PGA Championship. Allegedly, Scheffler had driven on the Valhalla Golf Club parking lot despite a police officer's instructions to stop. This incident occurred after streets were closed due to a fatal car accident earlier that morning.

Scheffler faced multiple charges including assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and running red lights at a Kentucky police station. Despite this, he was eventually released and managed to make it to his scheduled tee time at the PGA.

Afterward, Scheffler was still trying to process the incident, which he called a “misunderstanding.”

During a press conference last week, he shared, "I feel like my head is still spinning. I can’t really explain what happened this morning. I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell. That was a first for me. That was part of my warmup. I was just sitting there waiting and I started going through my warmup, I felt like there was a chance I may be able to still come out here and play."

He went on to say, "I was never angry. I was just in shock, and I think my body was just — I was shaking the whole time. I was shaking for like an hour. It was definitely a new feeling for me."

An arraignment was initially scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, but has since been postponed until next month.

Editor's P/S:

The arrest of pro golfer Scottie Scheffler has raised concerns about the handling of the situation by law enforcement. Mayor Greenberg's emphasis on reducing violent crime is commendable, but it is crucial to ensure that all incidents are investigated fairly and without bias. The allegations against Scheffler are serious, and it is important that the legal process is respected and that all parties involved are treated equally under the law.

The statement from Scheffler's attorney suggests that they believe there was a misunderstanding and that their client did not intentionally assault a police officer or commit the other alleged offenses. It is important to note that Scheffler has not been convicted of any charges and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The upcoming arraignment will provide an opportunity for further details to be presented and for the legal process to unfold.
