Find out in this thrilling episode Rating: 4/5 stars

In Loki Season Episode 4 of the TVA, fans are given a glimpse into a clandestine affair and witness numerous consequences, further intensifying the already dire situation. Surprisingly, the second season of Loki is nearing its conclusion, with Disney+ having just released the latest episode.

In the last encounter with Loki, Mobius, Sylvie, and the TVA, they encountered the variant Victor Timely, who is actually He Who Remains. Additionally, it appeared that Sylvie had overcome Ravonna Renslayer. The intensity between all parties heightened in Episode 4 as the Time Loom remains at the threshold of destruction and significant revelations took place.

All the powers of a god, but still can’t talk

While Loki Season 2 has still be a lot of fun to watch as a fan, one of the things it’s lacking is more screen time between everyone’s favorite gods.

Loki and Sylvie were the driving force of the inaugural season, joining forces to dismantle the TVA and ultimately confront He Who Remains. However, the second season has been lacking in showcasing the intense chemistry that defined their dynamic.

Granted, it is understandable given the imminent multiversal conflict and the dire consequences of the TVA's potential annihilation. Nonetheless, it would be greatly appreciated to witness further meaningful dialogues reminiscent of the enlightening Episode 4 exchange.

Despite Loki's efforts to persuade Sylvie and convince her that the TVA can be a powerful ally worth defending, she remains unconvinced of his argument.

Sylvie continues to carry significant trauma connected to the TVA, which is completely understandable. Therefore, it is no surprise that she would be hesitant to assist them in any manner. Nonetheless, it can be a bit frustrating to listen to her converse with Loki as if he had been incorrect about nearly everything leading up to this moment.

Ultimately, Sylvie remains a variant of Loki, although she possesses her own distinct personality. Consequently, she is likely to exhibit some stubbornness and be difficult to persuade. However, it is possible that in Season 2, if given more opportunities for one-on-one conversations, Loki may have been able to break down her defenses to a greater extent.

A lover’s quarrel leads to a revenge quest

Despite there being two episodes remaining in the current season, there is ample time for the duo to gain perspective and ultimately unite as the formidable team they were destined to become. However, audiences will have to exercise patience and wait to see if this envisioned outcome truly materializes.

In Episode 4, one of the most significant reveals for fans was the revelation that He Who Remains and Renslayer were once a couple. Not only were they in a committed relationship, but Renslayer also played a crucial role in leading He Who Remains' army during the Kang multiverse war and assisting in the establishment of the TVA.

For avid readers of comic books, this disclosure does not come as a surprise, as it has been a significant element in Renslayer's storyline across multiple issues.

Throughout the series, Renslayer has repeatedly put herself in danger for the sake of Kang, but ultimately took his life when she came to the realization that he would never prioritize her over his plan to defeat the Avengers.

In Episode 4, Renslayer learns from Miss Minutes that He Who Remains had orchestrated her arrival at the TVA by erasing her memory, allowing him to assert his rule over the multiverses without her involvement. This revelation proves to be a devastating setback for Renslayer, who had begun to establish a rapport with Timely and form a meaningful bond with him. Moreover, Renslayer had made the tumultuous decision to upend her life at the TVA based on Miss Minutes' insistence, driven by her strong desire to meet the individual responsible for everything.

Armed with this newfound knowledge, Renslayer enters full revenge mode upon returning to the TVA alongside Miss Minutes. Their mission is to recruit the Minute Men who were imprisoned following the branch bombings that occurred earlier in the season.

The sole Minute Man who willingly aligns himself with their cause is Brad Wolfe, driven by his desperate desire to return to his life on Earth.

The remaining individuals met a grisly fate, being crushed to death inside a prisoner box, creating a memorable and eerie scene within the show. As we witnessed Renslayer's emotionless reaction to the carnage, it becomes evident how deeply she has descended into darkness. It is intriguing to observe Renslayer embracing the role of the villain, which was previously occupied by He Who Remains. However, it remains uncertain if she will ultimately pose as the ultimate adversary that the group must overcome.

A wolf in sheep’s clothing or an actual sheep?

The jury is still out when it comes to trusting Timely as he’s a Kang variant whose loyalties are a bit hard to pin down at the moment.

In the episode, Sylvie expresses concern about the potential danger of revealing Timely "behind the curtain," referring to the TVA and its inner workings, including the Loom.

However, Loki defends the choice to bring him there, seeing it as a potential means to prevent him from becoming the same menace as He Who Remains.

However, that suggests that Timely isn’t already going down that path, which both Loki and the audience can’t be sure of.

Although Timely is currently a benign scientist assisting the gang in repairing the Time Loom, there is no guarantee that he won't leverage his acquired knowledge once the mission is completed and evolve into He Who Remains.

Episode 4 strongly highlights the importance of holding onto hope and trusting in people's innate goodness. However, we have witnessed how this optimism can lead to disastrous consequences, particularly with Loki himself.

Time cannot be contained

As stated in the earlier review of an episode, the depiction of time in Loki is remarkably captivating as it presents the idea not as a simple loop or straight line, but as a combination of interconnected branches occurring in various locations.

At the start of Season 2, Loki had no choice but to remove himself from the timeline to put an end to his time irregularities.

However, contrary to expectations, Loki does not prune himself. Instead, he is unexpectedly attacked from behind while gazing at Sylvie inside an elevator. This moment also doubles as his glimpse into her presence within the crumbling TVA.

In a clever twist, Episode 4 of Loki reveals that the person responsible for pruning Loki is actually a future version of Loki himself. The Loki we witness in this episode is aware of the elevator situation and decides to remove himself from the timeline in order to preserve the current state of events.

However, this raises an intriguing question: is the Loki we encounter in Episode 4 different from the one we saw in Episode 1? Despite pruning himself from the timeline, he still coexisted with his previous self.

Loki's manipulation of time can be quite complex, but it's immensely enjoyable as it reveals the intricate connections between everything.

We can only hope the final two episodes will further elaborate on time and how the multiverse will function as we move into Marvel’s Phase 6.

Loki Season 2 Episode 4 score: 4 / 5 stars

In Season 2, there is a need for improved interaction between Loki and Sylvie, as they seem to be overshadowed by the Time Loom imploding. However, Episode 4 leaves fans in a wonderfully unpredictable state, as the direction of the show and the season's conclusion remain uncertain.

The episode concludes with chaos unfolding as Brad prunes Renslayer, the majority of the Minute Men vanish, the Time Loom explodes causing branches to collide, and Timely appears to disintegrate. Every possible mishap occurs, suggesting that all hope is lost. However, the season still has two remaining episodes.

Did Timely intend for the Loom to explode as part of their plan to initiate the multiverse war? Is the TVA permanently disbanded? Will Loki, Sylvie, Mobis, and the rest awaken in a different timeline or as different variants? Will the last two episodes lay the groundwork for the Kang saga in the forthcoming Avengers movie? To discover the answers, viewers will have to tune in next week.
