Warning! The following article contains spoilers for episode 3 of Loki season 2. In a surprising twist, the latest episode of Loki season 2 has revealed the true successor to Ultron in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While the MCU has not explored the concept of AI extensively since Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, this episode suggests the potential danger of AI creations beyond Tony Stark and Bruce Banner's creation.
In episode 3 of Loki season 2, a character named Victor Timely, who is a variant of Kang, makes an appearance. Actor Jonathan Majors, known for his portrayal of He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror, plays Timely. Through Timely's inclusion in the plot of Loki season 2, Marvel Studios may have introduced an unexpected replacement for Ultron, eight years after the introduction of the AI villain.
Loki Makes Miss Minutes Ultron's Real MCU Replacement
In the world of Loki, the Ultron replacement known as Miss Minutes becomes a more menacing character in season 2. In season 1, Miss Minutes was an ally to He Who Remains, though her trustworthiness was questionable. Acting as an AI assistant to He Who Remains, Miss Minutes dutifully followed his commands as the head of the TVA.
However, in season 2, episode 3, Miss Minutes takes on a central role in the plot. Alongside Ravonna Renslayer, she seeks to transform Victor Timely into the persona of He Who Remains. Throughout the episode, Timely makes it clear that he cannot fulfill Miss Minutes' desires. His affection for Ravonna and rejection of Miss Minutes' professed love for him/He Who Remains leads to the AI creation embracing her true villainous nature. This transformation results in a genuinely threatening and potentially the real successor to Ultron in the future.
What is Miss Minutes Exactly?
The nature of Miss Minutes is somewhat unclear in regards to the ending of Loki season 2, episode 3. She appears to be an AI entity with her own thoughts, feelings, and desires, acting of her own volition. However, it is uncertain how she manifests herself in her surroundings.
Unlike the cartoon depiction in Loki season 1, Miss Minutes is more like an AI projection, though the origin of this projection remains unknown. With Miss Minutes emerging as a prominent antagonist in the show after episode 3 of season 2, hopefully, future episodes of Loki will shed light on her backstory and operations. Marvel Studios can seize the opportunity to introduce a major AI villain in Loki, filling the void left by Ultron and contributing to the overall narrative of the MCU.
New episodes of Loki release Thursdays at 6pm PT / 9pm ET on Disney+.
