Summary
Loki's recollection of The Avengers appears to be distant in Loki season 2 episode 2, creating the illusion that he considers them to be events from a bygone era.
The events of Loki season 1 and the start of season 2 unfold within a short span of time, implying that Loki should recall the aftermath of The Avengers as if it were the current reality.
Loki's extended lifespan and his tenure at the TVA may be contributing to his distorted recollection of the timeline, or he might be intentionally presenting his memories in a manner that aligns with Mobius' perception, to foster a sense of understanding.
Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Loki season 2, episode 2. The second episode of Loki season 2 raises questions about the show's position in the MCU timeline due to Loki's potentially unreliable memories. Despite being a former villain, Loki has swiftly transformed into a hero since being taken from his original timeline. At the beginning of Loki season 2, he reflects on his past and reconsiders his true purpose. However, some may find Loki's sudden transition to heroism a bit too abrupt, including Loki himself.
Since Loki's experiences at the TVA occur beyond the normal space-time continuum, determining his exact place in the MCU's chronology becomes challenging. From a conventional standpoint, all of Loki's actions at the TVA headquarters, the Void, and the Citadel at the End of Time appear to happen simultaneously in the past, present, future, and never. Nevertheless, Loki's perception of time should not change dramatically. Therefore, his remarks to Mobius in Loki season 2 episode 2 may appear perplexing if he still perceives time as progressing normally.
How Loki Talks About The Avengers Events Doesn't Make Sense
Loki attempts to console his distressed friend, Mobius, in season 2 episode 2 of Loki after Hunter X-05 provokes his anger. Drawing from his own personal experiences, Loki reflects back to the events of The Avengers in 2012 when he invaded Earth and held New York City captive using an alien army. However, it seems peculiar that Loki would phrase his confession in such a manner given that the memories of his actions in The Avengers should still be fresh in his mind.
In reality, the most recent recollection Loki should have before his capture by the TVA is being apprehended by the Avengers following the Battle of New York. Shortly after the TVA agents bring Loki to their headquarters, Mobius enlightens Loki with the events that transpired after 2012, which encompass the death of his mother and his own demise at the hands of Thanos. Nevertheless, from Loki's perspective, as those occurrences have yet to unfold, he should still regard the aftermath of the Battle of New York as the present.
How Long Has It Been Since Loki Was Brought To The TVA?
In the TVA and other realms beyond the Sacred Timeline, the conventional notion of time doesn't apply. However, there is still a sense of cause and effect, and characters experience the progression of time naturally. As a result, the fast-paced events of Loki season 1 occur within a span of one or two days from the perspective of an ordinary person. In contrast, the pace of Loki season 2's first two episodes slows down significantly, suggesting that Loki finally had some respite after the relentless struggles spanning approximately two days.
Considering the fact that Loki brings the TVA up to date, collaborates with Ouroboros to mend the Sacred Timeline, searches for Hunter X-05, and examines X-05's TemPad, it can be inferred that Loki season 2's initial two episodes unfold over a period of one or two days. Consequently, in Loki's timeline, his arrest following his defeat by the Avengers in 2012 took place roughly four days before his confession to Mobius. Therefore, his choice of words, such as "remember that time when...," seems out of character. Nevertheless, it is possible that Loki's memories are distorted for some other reason or that he is purposely choosing his phrasing under the influence of Mobius.
Loki's MCU history dates back over a millennium, thanks to his Ice Giant abilities which grant him an incredibly long lifespan. With countless memories spanning the centuries and his recent arrival at the TVA's timeless headquarters, there is a possibility that Loki may have misremembered the timing of the Battle of New York. Alternatively, Loki may be attempting to connect with Mobius by describing his memories in a way that resonates with him. After all, Mobius already has knowledge of every aspect of Loki's life. Regardless, by the time we reach Loki season 2, Loki has been through a great deal, so his choice of words may not be his main concern at the moment.
New episodes of Loki are released on Disney+ every Thursday at 6pm PT / 9pm ET.
