Lily Gladstone showed her support for Scott George, the Best Original Song nominee for his performance of "Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)" with the Osage Singers during the show. This post was shared on Tuesday, March 12.
She expressed her gratitude for the Osage Nation being the ones to bring them on stage that night. She felt that the history portrayed in the film rightfully belonged to the Osage Nation. Being close enough to experience the drum was a true honor.
Gladstone, who grew up on the Blackfeet Reservation, portrayed Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese's epic Western thriller. Her role in the film showcased her Indian heritage. She starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, who played her deceitful husband.
DiCaprio, who is 49 years old, did not get nominated for his performance. However, he was one of the first people to congratulate Gladstone when the list was announced.
"He was maybe the third person to text me after the news came in. After my reps of course, because the second it came in, my reps were texting me," Gladstone shared during a January interview with Extra. "But Leo was soon to follow and he was just so proud."
Gladstone, the first Indigenous American to be nominated in the Oscars' Best Actress category, expressed disappointment that DiCaprio did not have a chance to win his second Academy Award.
She shared, "I was watching the nominations with my parents and we were celebrating my nomination, but at the same time, we were all very upset for him. He did an amazing job in this film, bringing to life a challenging character and making my job much easier."
Gladstone won Best Actress at the 2024 Golden Globes in January, becoming the first Indigenous winner in her category. Although she didn't win an Oscar, this was a significant achievement for her.
During her acceptance speech, Gladstone expressed her gratitude to everyone in the room. She mentioned her Blackfeet community and how they had supported and inspired her throughout her journey. She also thanked her mother for working hard to preserve their language and culture, even though she herself was not Blackfeet.
She went on to say that she was thankful for the opportunity to speak some of her language, even though she wasn't completely fluent. In the past, Native actors would say their lines in English and then the sound mixers would reverse them to make it sound like they were speaking in their Native language on camera.
