With less than three months left until the release of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Square Enix revealed new footage of the game at this year's The Game Awards. The studio showcased the new theme song in a dramatic musical segment during the show and later released a full-length trailer on YouTube.
The trailer hints at several iconic moments from the original game, including a beloved character's unfortunate fate. It also sets the stage for a difficult situation that Cloud will soon face, as he confesses to Tifa: "Sometimes I don't even know who I am. I forget things everyone else remembers just fine, and know things I've got no right knowing."
Zack Fair, the protagonist of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, is heavily featured in the trailer. The trailer shows Zack's face-off against the Shinra military and a conversation with Biggs, perhaps in a universe where all Avalanche members except Zack have been killed. It's open to speculation, and then we see Zack beside a comatose Cloud speaking to Marlene. Marlene warns Zack that once Cloud wakes up, a scary man will kill her, likely referring to Aerith.
The trailer also gives fans a first look at the game's final party member, Cid Highwind, a glimpse of Cait Sith's combat, a closer look at Vincent Valentine, and clips from pivotal scenes such as Barret and Dyne's dramatic meeting. The trailer closes with a preview of the upcoming theme song for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, which seems to make its debut during the Golden Saucer's Dragon King play.
The new trailer for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth was not the only major announcement at The Game Awards. We have compiled a list of the most significant reveals of the night, including all of The Game Awards winners.
