The Lando show, announced in 2020, has had minimal updates, as the writer has confirmed that the project is currently on hold. Initially announced at Disney's Investor Day alongside other Star Wars Disney+ shows, some of which have been realized and others that haven't, the show was intended to focus on the charismatic smuggler and trusted confidant of Han Solo, with Donald Glover reprising his role from Solo: A Star Wars Story.
However, three years after the project's announcement, writer Justin Simien has stated in an interview with The Direct that the Lando show is still currently paused. When asked if the show will still happen, Simien responded:
I dedicated a significant amount of time and effort into collaborating with them to create an exceptional show. It seems to be well-received by everyone. However, I was informed that we had to halt its progress due to scheduling conflicts. The last update I received was several years ago, in 2020. Consequently, I am completely unaware of the current status.
Simien's remarks truly illustrate his deep enthusiasm for the project. Alongside his team, he invested considerable effort in crafting a Star Wars story centered around Lando Calrissian, even before its official announcement in 2020. Unfortunately, since being informed of the show's postponement, he has been left in the dark, much like the anxious Star Wars fans longing for an update. Lucasfilm has yet to provide any information to Simien regarding the development of the Lando show.
Will The Lando Disney+ TV Show Ever Happen?
Lando's writer's comments have raised doubts about whether the show will ever be released. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that Lando will be finished. Lucasfilm has developed a reputation for canceling projects in recent years, including films like Rogue Squadron and Kevin Feige's planned movie, as well as the cancellation of Rangers of the New Republic on the Disney+ platform. It appears that Lucasfilm's focus on Disney+ will revolve around stories set in the New Republic era in the years to come. In 2023 alone, Star Wars shows such as Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew are set to be released, with The Mandalorian season 4 following suit. Regrettably, the era in which Lando is set does not align with these plans.
Another obstacle to the realization of the show is Donald Glover's attachment to the titular role. While Glover has expressed his willingness to play the character in a recent interview with GQ, and there is widespread agreement that he is exceptional in the role, Lucasfilm is increasingly hesitant about recasting. This sentiment was evident with the use of deep fake technology to portray Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Consequently, the chances of Glover reprising his role as Lando are diminishing each day, regardless of how outstanding he would be in the starring role of a Star Wars project featuring the charismatic Calrissian.
