Lady Gaga is finally making her debut as Harley Quinn in the new movie "Joker: Folie à Deux." The trailer, released on Tuesday, also features Joaquin Phoenix reprising his Oscar-winning role as the Joker.
The teaser trailer starts off with Phoenix's Joker, named Arthur Fleck, being escorted through a facility while cuffed and with a plain expression. He walks down a corridor and locks eyes with Quinn, who is standing in what looks like a choir room.
Later on, Quinn, played by Gaga, declares, "I'm nobody," as she mimes holding a gun to her head and pulling the trigger. She adds, "I haven't accomplished anything in my life like you have."
The clip then shows the villainous couple dancing on the street, avoiding explosions, fleeing from mobs, and sharing kisses through Fleck's jail cell. All of this is set to a haunting version of the classic song "What the World Needs Now is Love."
At one point, Fleck declares, "I'll tell you what's different now. I'm no longer alone."
In the world of DC comic books, the Joker and Harley Quinn have frequently been romantically involved, with Quinn first appearing as the villain's therapist at Arkham Asylum.
Director Todd Phillips has not revealed specific details about how he will portray these iconic characters in his upcoming sequel. However, judging from his unique take on the Joker in the successful 2019 movie, it is likely that "Folie" will offer a fresh perspective different from the original comic book stories.
"Folie" features Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz playing the roles of Fleck's neighbor Sophie.
The movie "Joker" earned over a billion dollars and received two Oscars in 2020, with one going to Phoenix for best actor.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” will premiere in theaters on October 4.
