President Nasser Al-Khelaifi insists that in order to remain at Paris Saint-Germain, Kylian Mbappe must commit to a new contract. Mbappe's current contract is set to expire in 2024 and he expressed his lack of interest in extending it by sending a letter to the club last month. Al-Khelaifi is determined to prevent the risk of Mbappe leaving on a free transfer next summer.
The France striker subsequently cleared up any confusion by stating that he had not made a request to the club to transfer him to Spanish giants Real Madrid, a team that has previously attempted but failed to secure the World Cup winner.
PSG now face a difficult decision on whether to allow Mbappe to reach the end of his 12-month remaining contract, thereby forfeiting any possibility of recouping the €180m (£153.8m) they invested in signing him from Monaco back in 2017.
"My stance is unequivocal. I don't wish to reiterate it repeatedly: if Kylian desires to remain, we earnestly desire for him to stay. However, he must formalize his commitment by signing a fresh contract," expressed Al-Khelaifi when addressing reporters subsequent to the introduction of Luis Enrique as the club's recently appointed manager.
"We are resolute in not allowing the departure of the world's finest player without receiving compensation. Such a scenario is not tenable. Remember, we are a French club."
Mbappe, who has consistently been Ligue 1's leading scorer for the past five seasons, is of utmost importance for PSG. With the recent departure of Lionel Messi without any transfer fee, PSG is determined to retain the services of the world's finest player and avoid a similar situation with Mbappe.
Messi, who has won the Ballon d'Or seven times, decided not to extend his contract and instead chose to join Inter Miami.
Mbappe clarified that French President Emmanuel Macron's opinions will not impact his career decisions, dismissing any suggestion that the leader has the power to influence him to remain in the capital.

The 24-year-old has publicly turned down the option of adding another 12 months to his current PSG deal
PSG's president has made it clear that the club desires Kylian Mbappe to remain, but he must agree to a new contract. Failure to do so would result in the club being compelled to sell him.
Mbappe's contract is set to expire next year, with the possibility of a one-year extension, that the player has declined.
PSG acknowledges the risk of losing the world's best player without any compensation next summer. Aware of his desire to join Real Madrid, Mbappe intends to wait out his contract and depart to Madrid as a free agent, leaving PSG empty-handed.
Mbappe would receive a signing bonus, higher wages, and potentially a loyalty bonus from PSG. Al-Khelaifi, however, is against this and it has resulted in a clash of interests.
Is Mbappe just using this as a negotiating strategy, or will he ultimately choose to stay?
"Or are Real Madrid being discreetly clever by saying they aren't going to make any more signings in this window, and come in for Mbappe at the end of the summer?"
