Kristen Stewart has a very different perspective on the Twilight series over a decade after the franchise premiered.

The films revolve around a heterosexual love triangle involving Bella Swan (played by Stewart), Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Despite this, Stewart, 33, now views the series as having a gay undertone. She expressed, "I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating." In an interview with Variety on January 11, she remarked, "It’s such a gay movie. I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK. I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love."

During the film's rapid rise, Stewart and Pattinson, 37, began a real-life romance from 2009 to 2013. Years later, Stewart publicly came out as gay during her monologue on Saturday Night Live, playfully referring to herself as "so gay" while addressing former President Donald Trump's tweets about her relationship with Pattinson.

"It was great to spin it in a humorous way because it could convey everything [about my sexuality] without [me] having to sit down for an interview," Stewart explained in an interview with Variety. "So where would that interview be? And who would profit from it? And who would be the person to break the story? I broke it, all by myself."

Stewart mentioned that there was no attempt to hide. She stated, "I have been openly out with my girlfriend for years at that point," and added, "I’m like, ‘I’m a pretty knowable person.’”

After publicly coming out on SNL, Stewart revealed that she has "truly been in love" with all of her past romantic partners.

"Did you doubt my feelings? I've always embraced my dual nature and truly believed in it without feeling conflicted. I just didn't appreciate being mocked," Stewart stated in her cover story for Harper's Bazaar U.K.'s September 2017 issue.
