The drama on Vanderpump Rules is not scripted, but it seems that some of it has been reenacted for the sake of the camera. Kristen Doute recently revealed a shocking revelation about the memorable season 2 cast trip to Mexico while reviewing the popular Bravo series for her podcast, "Sex, Love and What Else Matters."
"I have a secret to share. The scene featuring Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney and the incident of drink throwing actually happened, as can be seen. However, the precise moment when Schwartz poured the drink, just that brief moment, was not captured by the cameras," Kristen, aged 40, revealed to her cohost and boyfriend, Luke Broderick, on the November 10 episode.
At the time, Schwartz, aged 41, and Katie, aged 36, who were in a relationship, were at odds due to Schwartz's attempts to involve Scheana Shay in the trip. During their drunken argument, Schwartz infamously poured a glass of beer onto Katie's head.
"One of our incredible DPs, our director of photography, momentarily set the camera down or shifted it from their shoulders and unfortunately missed that crucial moment, which was utterly unbelievable," Kristen stated. "Naturally, we all empathized with the camera person since we truly value our crew. It was such an improbable occurrence, right? Consequently, Tom and Katie had to return to the identical club the very next night in order to recreate that small segment."
Kristen clarified that only the act of throwing the drink was replicated, and further added, "Everything leading up to that moment, as well as our presence there to console Katie, was authentic. We didn't accompany Tom and Katie back to the bar to film that scene. I just believe it's one of those instances that took place a decade ago, and I simply wanted to express it."
In order to address any potential criticism, Kristen preemptively dispelled any speculations about the show being scripted.
"I want to clarify that I don't want the fans or viewers to mistakenly believe that this was fabricated. It was simply a fleeting moment," she emphasized. "However, it begs the question: how can we realistically portray everything that occurred without including that particular incident?"
Kristen praised Katie Maloney for her decision to return to the show sober and protect herself from being humiliated by her significant other. Meanwhile, Schwartz expressed regret for his past actions, acknowledging that he deeply cringes at the memory of throwing a drink at Katie. Despite the shame he felt, he has since made peace with it and no longer condones or defends such behavior. He considers it a necessary release at the time.
Katie and Schwartz ended their relationship in 2022 after getting married on the show in 2016 and legally tying the knot in 2019.
In September, Katie opened up about the split on the "Almost Adulting" podcast, revealing that it had been a gradual process over several months. She realized that she needed to have an honest conversation with herself and Schwartz. Despite still having feelings for him, she admitted that the emotional connection and romance had disappeared.
Katie found solace in watching Vanderpump Rules as it allowed her to distance herself from Schwartz. This was particularly beneficial after he kissed Raquel Leviss during season 10, despite their agreement to date people outside of their friend group.
"There came a point where I had a revelation and thought, 'I've had enough.' The way he was acting and talking about certain situations on the show was repulsive to me," Katie explained. "It caused me to develop some resentment towards him, but strangely enough, it was a blessing in disguise. It helped me move forward."
