Spoiler Alert: Skull Island brings a delightful twist to Kong's journey, providing him with a new sidekick in the MonsterVerse. Traditionally, Kong has been depicted as the sole survivor of his species, making him a solitary protagonist throughout his films. However, in both the MonsterVerse and King Kong movies at large, Kong's only solace has come from the presence of human characters, often portrayed as females.
By delving deeper into the life of Kong on Skull Island, the Netflix anime series consisting of eight episodes offered additional insights into his backstory as well as the island itself. While the majority of the focus was on the human characters and their adventures, Kong's significance to the overarching narrative gradually increased. In the second-to-last episode of Skull Island, the anime drew the attention to Kong and recounted a heart-wrenching tale of how the colossal creature lost his human companion to a monstrous sea creature lurking in the depths of the ocean. Not only that, but the episode also revealed a surprising detail about Kong's connection with one of the previously introduced monsters in the show.
Skull Island Introduces Kong’s First Monster Sidekick
In the Skull Island series, a massive pink hawk played an intriguing role as Kong's unexpected ally. Although initially portrayed as a hostile presence, snatching up characters in its powerful talons and soaring away with them, it turns out that the hawk does this for Kong's benefit. Rather than taking the captives to its own nest, the hawk delivers them to Kong's revered temple, presumably as a source of sustenance for the mighty ape. Episode 7 of Skull Island shed further light on this unique relationship, revealing that the hawk also aids Kong during battles. When Kong found himself in a fierce encounter with a group of chameleon monsters, the hawk joined the fray, swooping in to protect Kong's human companion when she was unexpectedly thrown off a cliff.
Is Kong’s New Ally Still Alive in The MonsterVerse?
The collaboration between Kong and the hawk signifies that despite being a loner, Kong once had a companion in the MonsterVerse timeline. On the other hand, Godzilla's cinematic rival, renowned for fighting alongside other monsters, had Rodan and Anguirus as his most notable sidekicks in Toho's movies. Notably, Mothra provided much-needed assistance to Godzilla in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, emphasizing her role as an ally. Considering the events of Skull Island, it is evident that Godzilla is not the only Titan alpha with reliable friends.
In addition to the possibility of a second season of Skull Island, fans are left to wonder if the introduction of this creature could pave the way for a significant team-up, particularly with the upcoming film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Unfortunately, the future of Skull Island doesn't offer much hope for the pink hawk to appear in a live-action capacity. A destructive storm wiped out the island's ecosystem before the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, resulting in the loss of most of its wildlife offscreen. Therefore, it's highly unlikely that the pink hawk has survived in the MonsterVerse.
It is a possibility that Kong's newfound monster ally managed to survive the destruction of Skull Island. Monarch established a containment outpost with the intention of safeguarding Kong, so it is plausible that they also took steps to preserve other creatures from Skull Island. Given Monarch's desire to prevent the extinction of Kong's species, it would make sense for them to hold the same sentiment towards the island's fauna. It is conceivable that they relocated some of these surviving creatures, including the potential presence of the pink hawk, to the secretive Hollow Earth realm for coexistence with Kong. Although this scenario may appear unlikely, it is not beyond the realm of possibility for the hawk to make a brief appearance in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
