In a recent interview with British GQ, Kirsten Dunst, 41, expressed her desire to have been a part of the superhero action in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. She revealed that she was not invited to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man franchise for the film. "No, no. I would have," she shared in the interview on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Kirsten Dunst first appeared as Peter Parker's friend and later love interest in the 2002 film Spider-Man, alongside Tobey Maguire. The success of the movie led to two sequels, Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007. A planned fourth installment was canceled, paving the way for the 2012 reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, with Andrew Garfield taking over the lead role.

In 2016, Tom Holland joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Spider-Man: No Way Home, his third solo film, saw the return of Maguire and Garfield as different versions of Spider-Man, along with villains from their past movies like Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx's Electro.

Maguire’s Peter Parker mentioned Mary Jane while talking about his love life with Garfield’s hero, even though Dunst did not make an appearance in the movie.

In her interview with British GQ, Dunst shared that working on the first Spider-Man movie felt "innocent" in comparison to the big superhero movies of today. She described the experience as making an indie film disguised as a superhero movie because of director Sam Raimi's unique style.

Dunst expressed interest in exploring Peter and Mary Jane’s relationship on screen with Maguire. She suggested a unique approach, imagining a different kind of superhero film similar to the indie movie Chronicle. She mentioned that it could be a fun and cool idea to work on together.

Raimi recently addressed rumors about a possible fourth Spider-Man movie with Maguire. He mentioned that he has not been approached about it yet and clarified that he is not currently working on it. Raimi acknowledged the success of the current Spider-Man movies by Marvel and Columbia and indicated uncertainty about returning to tell another Spider-Man story.

Maguire has previously expressed his eagerness to don his Spidey suit again. In an interview with Marvel.com in January 2023, he shared, "I love these films and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and asked me to hang out, goof around, or even do another Spider-Man movie, my answer would be a resounding 'Yes!' Why wouldn't I want to do that?"

Although there hasn't been official confirmation of a fourth Maguire Spider-Man movie yet, fans can look forward to seeing Holland, 27, in another solo MCU film. The last movie, No Way Home, left fans feeling bittersweet as Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) used a spell to make everyone forget about Peter to save the multiverse from chaos.

Holland shared with the Critics Choice Association in December 2023 that he would only consider making another Spider-Man film if it truly honored the character. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of a franchise that improved and gained more success with each movie, a rarity in the industry. Holland emphasized the importance of preserving the character's legacy and stated that he would not rush into making another film unless it was meaningful and worthwhile for the character.

Kirsten Dunst's revelation about her absence from "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is a poignant reminder of the bittersweet nature of Hollywood reboots. While fans clamored to see Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their iconic roles, the omission of Dunst as Mary Jane Watson left a palpable void. Her desire to explore Peter and Mary Jane's relationship further, in a unique and indie-inspired superhero film, highlights the missed opportunity for a deeper dive into their iconic love story.

The article also sheds light on the ongoing debate surrounding the future of Maguire's Spider-Man. While fans eagerly anticipate a potential fourth installment, Raimi remains uncertain about his involvement, and Holland's commitment to respecting the character's legacy suggests a cautious approach to future projects. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to revisit Maguire's Spider-Man lies in the hands of Marvel and Columbia, who must balance fan expectations with the integrity of the beloved character.
