Kirsten Dunst is looking back on filming a tough scene with her husband, Jesse Plemons, in the new dystopian movie Civil War.

The film is set in a future where California and Texas have broken away and joined forces to create the rebel group "Western Forces" in a bid to take down the ruling government. Dunst, who is 41 years old, plays the role of Lee, a famous photojournalist who travels through the war-torn country capturing the events. Plemons, aged 36, takes on the role of an unnamed soldier.

In one scene of the movie, Dunst and Plemons face a tense moment where his character aims a gun at Lee and her team, putting their lives at risk.

Dunst shared with Entertainment Tonight in an interview on Monday, April 8, that even just reading the script for that scene was intense. When they arrived on set to film it, the atmosphere was filled with tension and emotion for everyone involved.

She explained, “That particular scene — just reading it from the script, it’s such a, you know, chilling moment. It’s really the turning point of the whole film.”

Plemons was a late addition to the cast, replacing the original actor who dropped out of the film. His wife proudly recommended him for the role.

During a March interview with Marie Claire, Dunst jokingly mentioned that our director, Alex Garland, is fortunate to have me married to the best actor.

Dunst and Plemons first met on the set of Fargo in 2015 and eventually got engaged. They have two sons, Ennis aged 5 and James aged 2. The couple tied the knot in 2022. Prior to their marriage, they both starred in the 2021 film The Power of The Dog, earning Academy Award nominations for their supporting roles.

The actress who played Spider-Man shared with ET that her husband agreed to take on the disturbing role in Civil War as a favor to them, not because he was eager to play such a challenging role.

She continued to explain how she and Plemons prepared for the intense scene by shooting it for two consecutive days. While Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson were filming their scenes, she and Jesse were doing improvisation to bring the scene to life.

The Bring It On star once shared with Marie Claire that she and the Friday Night Lights alum have a unique way of collaborating. "We fell in love creatively first, since we fell in love on a set," Dunst explained. "I believe we'll always go back to that, but in a way that doesn't involve our real lives. Also, we don't really talk to each other on set. I give him space, he gives me space."

While they have found success by giving each other space on set, Dunst made it clear that this does not reflect their personal relationship.

She expressed her admiration for working with him and mentioned that the key factor is the high level of trust they have in each other.
