House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced on Wednesday that he will be resigning from Congress at the end of this year, following his recent ouster from the speakership. McCarthy, who has served for 17 years and held a leadership position for much of that time, reflected on his accomplishments in a Wall Street Journal op-ed and expressed no regrets about his time in office. His departure comes just nine months after he became Speaker and was later removed from the position for his decision to collaborate with Democrats on a spending bill, which outraged members of his own party.
"We did what was right, regardless of the challenges or sacrifices. While it may not be the norm in Washington, delivering real results for the American people is still valued nationwide," he stated.
"I never expected the path that unfolded when I first entered the race," he added. "I am leaving knowing that I gave it my all, always with a positive attitude. And now, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way."
House Republicans are preparing to honor McCarthy at a party next week, as per an invitation obtained by CNN. The gathering was arranged prior to McCarthy's public statement, but Republicans had anticipated his decision not to seek reelection and intended to convene a party to express gratitude and bid farewell to McCarthy, according to a source familiar with the planning. McCarthy's choice will diminish the already slim majority of the House GOP, which has recently decreased further following the ousting of former Rep. George Santos of New York.
North Carolina Representative Richard Hudson, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, expressed gratitude to McCarthy for his "dedication to our nation and the expansion of the House Republican majority."
Hudson stated, "Kevin's keen political acumen, as well as his personal efforts in raising substantial funds and recruiting a diverse range of candidates, played a pivotal role in our transformation from the minority to the majority. His commitment to strengthening our party reflects a deep patriotism and a sincere desire to serve, which are at the heart of Kevin's motivation."
McCarthy announced his decision in a video, stating, "It is time to pursue my passion in a new arena. While I will be leaving the House at the end of this year, I will continue to fight for this country that I love."
