Kevin Bacon reveals that he once bought a plot of land with haunted house with the stipulation that he would destroy the house within a month.
The owner was worried that Bacon might become possessed and cause damage, so he decided to demolish the house. Despite Bacon's desire to take some pine boards from the house, his wife Kyra Sedgwick denied him permission.
Kevin Bacon recently shared in an interview with Rob Lowe on the Literally! podcast that he once purchased a piece of land in Connecticut that came with an unusual condition. The owner of the property claimed that the house on the land was haunted and expressed concerns that Bacon might become possessed if he didn't take action. In order to finalize the sale, Bacon agreed to the owner's stipulation that he would have to demolish the house within a month. Here is the full quote from Bacon:
One of the items we purchased contained an old house that the seller was reluctant to let me acquire. This house had been abandoned but held sentimental value for the owner, as it was where he had spent his childhood. We had a back-and-forth discussion about it for some time until I finally voiced my concern, saying, "It's strange for you to sell me a piece of land without including the house on it. What if someone ends up living right in our backyard?" In response, he explained, "I cannot sell you the house because it is haunted. I fear that you may become possessed and cause significant damage." After much negotiation, we ultimately agreed, as stated in the contract, that the house must be demolished within a month. Interestingly, I not only refrained from spending a night in the haunted house but also decided to salvage certain elements from it. Upon discovering beautiful antique pine boards and a banister, I suggested to Kyra Sedgwick, "Let's remove these and incorporate them into our own home." However, she strongly objected, saying, "Absolutely not. Those things will not be placed in our house." The haunting of the house was a complex tale involving the spirit of a Native American who had been murdered by a colonial soldier in the 1700s. The owner had even sought the assistance of ghostbusters, making it a lengthy and intricate ordeal.
Kevin Bacon Has a Rich History in the Horror Genre
Although this encounter may be Kevin Bacon's initial real-life encounter with the supernatural, he has actually starred in a number of horror films. In fact, one of his earliest roles was in the 1980 slasher film Friday the 13th, where he met a gruesome demise at the hands of the vengeful Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer), as depicted by an arrow. Last year, he also appeared in the slasher film They/Them, set in a conversion camp, providing a fitting conclusion to the first four decades of his career with summer camp horror movies.
In the years that followed, Kevin Bacon has starred in various horror movies, in addition to Friday the 13th. Two notable titles are the comedic monster film Tremors and the thriller Hollow Man, which puts a twist on the Invisible Man concept. Apart from these, Bacon has also confronted supernatural forces in films like The Darkness, Flatliners, and Stir of Echoes, even exploring a real-life haunted house.
Bacon's involvement in the horror genre has expanded beyond these films. In recent years, renowned horror figure Robert Englund proposed that Bacon could potentially succeed him in the role of the infamous Elm Street slasher, Freddy Krueger. While this may not materialize, his daughter Sosie Bacon has carried on her father's horror legacy by starring in the surprise hit supernatural thriller Smile in 2022.
