Chapter 99 recap
The 99th chapter of Kaiju No. 8 opened with Kafka Hibino, still in his transformed form, persisting in his seemingly futile battle against the monsters summoned by Kaiju No. 9. He felt an urgency to reach No. 9 and Mina Ashiro, but was instead instructed to immediately head to Tachikawa, as he alone lacked the power to defeat No. 9. Reluctantly agreeing, he found himself paralyzed with fear at the thought of the seemingly unavoidable impending deaths.
Akira Kurusu observed that both the troops and civilians were losing morale due to No. 9’s livestream, especially if they see Mina dying. Kaiju No. 9 taunted humanity for losing what’s most important and swallowed up Mina Ashiro, starting the countdown to her eventual death. Other soldiers pleaded with Kafka to go to Mina and forget about them, fearing that if they lost her, it would be all over. However, Kafka stopped when he sensed a massive monster signature and witnessed Reno Ichikawa freeze the nearby monsters and area. The chapter ended with Reno revealing that he had mastered the No. 6 weapons suit and urged Kafka to move forward.
What to expect (speculative)
Reno Ichikawa's return sets Kafka up to go to Mina without any worries. However, Kaiju No. 8 chapter 100 is unlikely to focus on Kafka's journey to Mina and No. 9's location. Instead, it will likely focus on Ichikawa and his activities during the war so far. It will set up an intense battle for Ichikawa as he takes on all of the mega monsters No. 9 summoned alone. With Ichikawa's immense power teased, Kaiju No. 8 chapter 100 promises to be an exciting entry in the series.
