Kaiju No. 8 by Naoya Matsumoto is a science fiction story set in a dystopian future Japan, where monstrous creatures called Kaiju have ravaged the world. Kafka Hibino, a disillusioned 32-year-old, had once made a pact with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro to join the Japan Defense Force and eliminate the Kaiju. However, Kafka faces difficulties in entering the Defense Force.
Although Kafka contributes to the cause by working for Monster Sweeper Inc, cleaning up the aftermath of Kaiju exterminations, Mina holds a high rank as the Captain of the 3rd Division in the Defense Force. Kafka's dream of fighting alongside his childhood friend seems unattainable. Yet, when he meets the determined Reno Ichikawa, Kafka rediscovers his motivation to enlist in the Defense Force and fulfill the promise he made as a child. However, a new and unprecedented Kaiju threat threatens to undermine all of Kafka's efforts.
