The highly anticipated Shibuya Incident arc has finally kicked off in the latest episode of Jujutsu Kaisen, and it is truly bone-chilling. While the series is no stranger to horror, revolving around terrifying curses and unique sorcerers battling them, the Shibuya arc takes it to a whole new level compared to previous storylines.

Jujutsu Kaisen's Shibuya Incident Feels Like a Horror Movie

: Season 2, episode 7 of the show concluded with Geto and his curse allies executing their ultimate plan in Shibuya on Halloween. The scene initially portrays regular civilians in costumes enjoying themselves in the district. However, a sense of unease is gradually built as some of the revelers notice the emergence of a barrier, separating Shibuya from the outside world. What follows is even more unsettling, as people are mysteriously drawn into the subway station as if being pulled by a massive whirlpool. The characters cannot help but compare this eerie development to a scene from a horror film, and the presentation further supports this comparison.

Jujutsu Kaisen has explored the horror genre before, with many of the Curses resembling monsters from horror movies. Their cruelty and sadism surpass the norm for shonen series. Some Curses draw inspiration from horror characters, like Mahito who shares similarities with Frankenstein's Monster, and the lesser-known Dagon whose design is reminiscent of Cthulhu. Even the non-special grade curses are frightening, emitting distorted voices that utter twisted phrases linked to their origins. Nevertheless, while Jujutsu Kaisen exudes a darker atmosphere, it remains firmly grounded in the realm of shonen rather than a full-fledged horror anime.

The classification is altered by the initial scenes of the Shibuya Incident. Despite the occurrence of future conflicts within the arc, the series presently emphasizes the creation of suspense through an atmosphere filled with unease, a technique commonly employed in horror stories. Moreover, the latest opening of Jujutsu Kaisen provides hints about the unsettling turns that await the characters, featuring even more indiscriminate killings than in previous episodes. This notion has already been exemplified through the depiction of a whirlpool of people in episode 7's conclusion, presented from a first-person perspective to heighten its sudden and deadly nature.

Nevertheless, these particular scenes serve as a preview of the impending escalation towards a much darker storyline. Considering the profound darkness depicted in Gojo's Past arc during the initial part of the season, the impact of this shift is hardly surprising. However, it is poised to significantly influence the trajectory of Jujutsu Kaisen moving forward, potentially even reshaping the overall tone of future shonen manga.
