In the Jujutsu Kaisen manga series by author and illustrator Gege Akutami, fans have witnessed two prominent figures that symbolize power and strength. These figures are Satoru Gojo and a fully revived Ryomen Sukuna. Their rivalry was introduced early in the series through Gojo's conversation with Yuji Itadori.
Similarly, there are other characters in Jujutsu Kaisen whose potential has been compared to the remarkable abilities achieved by Gojo. One noteworthy character is Fumihiko Takaba, who, according to recent spoilers, has demonstrated the ability to confront and hold his ground against Kenjaku in a fight.
However, there are even students from Tokyo Jujutsu High who are believed to have the ability to surpass Gojo, and one such student is Yuji Itadori, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen. Regrettably, there was never any indication that Megumi Fushiguro, a fan-favorite character, possessed the potential to surpass Gojo. It appears that Akutami had always intended for this to be the case.

Why Megumi was never going to surpass Gojo
The Jujutsu Kaisen series has featured Gojo discussing certain students who have the potential to surpass him. Notable individuals include Itadori, Yuta Okkotsu, and Kinji Hakari, all of whom possess exceptional talent or skills that make them eligible. It is worth mentioning that while Maki Zen'in was never explicitly stated to be able to surpass Gojo, she managed to surpass Toji Fushiguro, Gojo's former enemy and arguable equal, as indicated by the series' narration.
On the other hand, Megumi Fushiguro was never explicitly declared to have the capacity to surpass Gojo. Although Gojo did mention to Megumi that he had more potential than Yuji and the ability to defeat Gojo with the Ten Shadows Technique, it was never explicitly stated that Megumi could surpass him. While this suggestion is implied through the comparison to Yuji, it is possible that Gojo was simply aiming to boost his adoptive son's confidence in that particular moment.
With this in mind, it appears that Akutami never had the intention of making Megumi reach the same level as Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen. This viewpoint is further supported by the later chapters of the series, where it is evident that Megumi lacks the same mental strength and resilience that Gojo possessed. Without this crucial element that made Gojo "the strongest," it becomes difficult to argue that Megumi could realistically surpass him.
This is further supported by the fact that Megumi is completely removed from the series shortly after his mental weakness is revealed during the Tsumiki Fushiguro incident. By doing so, Akutami prevents any potential character growth or developments that Megumi may have had after Gojo's death. In essence, Akutami is implicitly conveying to readers that Megumi has already reached his maximum potential as both a sorcerer and a character, particularly when compared to Gojo.
While this may disappoint many fans who consider Megumi a favorite character, it is a logical conclusion considering his role in the story. Despite being a central focus, he is not the true protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, which significantly limits his potential for growth. Although Akutami could potentially bring him back and challenge this perception, all existing evidence suggests that this is unlikely to happen.
