On his birthday, Judi Dench accidentally FaceTimed a friend while she was naked, taking the concept of a "birthday suit" to a whole new level. The 88-year-old actress shared the embarrassing moment during an interview on BBC Radio 2's The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, where she explained that she had called her friend Chris Logan from the bathtub after being reminded by her daughter, Finty Williams.

Dench recalled picking up her phone and exclaiming, “Chris, Happy Happy,” which caused two people to react in shock. What was meant to be a simple phone call quickly turned into Dench unintentionally giving the birthday boy a view of her nude body in the tub. "Well, it was FaceTiming them," Dench continued. "I don’t know about FaceTime. Poor Chris… happy birthday!"

Zoe Ball, the host, playfully remarked, "Now that's a birthday message you can't beat, right?"

Dench chuckled and shared that her age-related macular degeneration has caused her to lose her vision. She also confessed, "I can't make sense of my phone. I have no idea what those buttons do."

Dench has been transparent about her macular degeneration diagnosis, stating to Reuters in a 2012 announcement, “This condition is something that thousands and thousands of people all over the world are having to contend with. It’s something that I have learnt to cope with and adapt to — and it will not lead to blindness.”

Dench was adamant at the time that she didn't want her eye issues to be exaggerated. Over the past decade, she has adjusted by memorizing her scripts through repetition rather than relying on her photographic memory.

"You discover a way to navigate and overcome the challenges you find very hard," Dench remarked during a February 2021 charity event for London's Vision Foundation. "I've had to find a different way to learn lines and things, which involves having my dear friends repeat them to me over and over and over again. So, I have to learn through repetition, and I just hope that people won't notice too much if all the lines are completely hopeless!"

Earlier this year, Dench gave an update on her eye health and admitted it has become even more difficult to read her lines back.

During a February interview on The Graham Norton Show, she confessed, "It has become impossible. And because I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines but also tells me where they appear on the page."

Despite encountering challenges with her new memorization process, Dench remains undeterred in her commitment to working in entertainment. In an interview with the Daily Mirror’s Notebook magazine in July, she expressed her determination to continue working "as much as I can" on a film set, regardless of her visual impairment.
