Dame Judi Dench's acting career began with her portrayal of Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Over time, she became one of Britain's most accomplished actresses, earning success through notable roles in films like Chocolat, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Shakespeare in Love.

Born in North Yorkshire, England in 1934, Dench embarked on her professional journey in 1957 with the Old Vic Company. Coming from a family of actors, she initially aspired to be a theater designer but ultimately pursued her passion for acting.

1951 to 1957

Dench’s career took off when she joined the York Mystery Plays in 1951, initially playing a forgetful angel. Within three years, she was cast as "the young man in white clothing" and eventually landed the coveted role of the Virgin Mary in 1957.

"In my final days at drama school," Dench fondly recalled in her 2010 memoir, "Martin Browne approached me and initially asked me to portray Eve. However, upon my arrival, he had a change of heart and instead requested that I bring the character of the Virgin Mary to life."

1957 to 1961

Dench's acting career took off in September 1957 when she landed her inaugural professional role as Ophelia in Shakespeare's renowned play, Hamlet, with the esteemed Old Vic Company. Reflecting on this milestone, Dench shared in an insightful interview with The Waterstones in October 2023 how she was casted by the renowned Michael Benthall.

The critics were furious as they believed it was audacious for the then-called National Theatre to cast a complete newcomer. Despite feeling unsure of her abilities, she recalled how Michael Benthall told her that she would continue performing in the company, taking on both larger and smaller roles, and even appearing as a background character in almost every production. Through this experience, she would learn and grow as an actress. She joined the company for four seasons, during which she also portrayed characters such as Katherine in Henry V and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet.

1964

Dench entered the film industry by landing the role of Miss Humphries in the 1964 psychological thriller, The Third Secret, marking her debut in film. In the subsequent year, she took on a minor role in the Sherlock Holmes thriller A Study in Terror.

1966 to 1968

Dench's breakout performance in the 1965 British film, Four in the Morning, led to her well-deserved victory at the 1966 BAFTA Awards. She was recognized with the prestigious Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles award, a category that unfortunately ceased to exist in 1984.

Two years later, Dench was awarded the BAFTA Best Actress award for her role in the 1966 TV drama Talking to a Stranger.

1970 to 1989

After joining the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), Dench graced its stages for almost two decades and received numerous Olivier Best Actress awards. Some of her most memorable portrayals included Lady Macbeth in Macbeth (1976), the Duchess in The Duchess of Malfi (1971), and Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1981).

During the production of John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi, Dench crossed paths with her late-husband, Michael Williams. They developed a deep connection, becoming engaged and married in the same year of the play's production, 1971. Their union resulted in the birth of their daughter, Finty Williams, in 1972.

1968

The initiation of Dench's musical career occurred in 1968 when she was presented with the opportunity to portray Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Dench reminisced about being invited to audition during a 2014 interview with Laura Barnett.

“I have never participated in a music production," she admitted. "I had previously acted in a play called The Promise. ... Out of the blue, my agent informed me that [director] Hal [Prince] wished to meet me for an opportunity in a show titled Cabaret. During the audition, I expressed, ‘I am not a singer by any means.’ To my surprise, Hal replied, ‘Keep in mind that in a musical, your speaking voice should align with your singing voice. If that is how you naturally speak, then that is how you should sing.’ It was an incredibly empowering statement. I have since shared this wisdom with numerous individuals.”

1988

In 1988, the Cabaret star embarked on a tour with the Renaissance Theatre Company for Renaissance Shakespeare on the Road. During this tour, she made her directorial debut by staging Much Ado About Nothing.

1997

Appearing in her debut leading role, Dench portrayed Queen Victoria in John Madden’s Mrs Brown in 1997. The film explores the Queen's connection with her personal servant, John Brown, and was showcased at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Dench's outstanding performance earned her the fourth BAFTA of her career and marked her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

1998

Dench and Madden collaborated once more for the production of Shakespeare in Love in 1998. In this romantic comedy, Dench portrayed the character of Queen Elizabeth I, a role that garnered her both an Academy Award and a BAFTA win for Best Supporting Actress in the subsequent year.

1999

In 1999, Dench took on the role of Esme Allen in the Broadway production of Amy's View. The character was a mother and well-known actress in the West End. Her performance in the play earned Dench a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.

Unfortunately, in the same year, Dench's husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. As his health deteriorated, Dench had to miss several performances of Amy's View to be by his side. Tragically, her husband passed away in 2001 and was posthumously honored with the Order of St. Gregory.

Grieving the loss of her husband, Dench found solace in her work, keeping herself busy with various projects.

“At least you are getting on and thinking of something else,” she explained in an interview with Louis Theroux in 2023.

2001 - 2009

The leading lady of Fine Romance received her fourth Oscar nomination for her role in the 2001 biographical drama Iris. She was also honored with an ALFS Award and Best Leading Actress Award at the 55th British Academy Film Awards for her outstanding performance. Continuing her success, Dench returned as M, the chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, in the 20th installment of the James Bond series, Die Another Day, a year later.

In 2004, Dench shared the screen with her friend Maggie Smith in the acclaimed English drama Ladies in Lavender. Her portrayal as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride & Prejudice was also highly praised.

Dench garnered critical acclaim for her role in the 2006 film "Notes on a Scandal," where she portrayed a London teacher alongside Cate Blanchett. Her exceptional performance earned her recognition, including an Academy nomination, a BIFA Award, and an Evening Standard Award. In 2008, Dench captivated audiences once again in the 22nd James Bond film, "Quantum of Solace," where her character M had a more prominent and engaging role with Bond. This led to a Saturn Award nomination in the subsequent year. Dench's return to the stage came in 2009 with her appearance in "Madame de Sade" as part of the Donmar season at Wyndham's theater in the West End. Additionally, she showcased her talent in several films, including "Rage," the musical film "Nine," and "Return to Cranford." For the latter, she received nominations for a Golden Globe Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Satellite Award.

2010

In February 2010, Dench collaborated with Peter Hall for A Midsummer Night’s Dream renewing her role as Titania almost 50 years after she first played the role for the RSC.

That year, in 2010, Conservationist David Mills extended an invitation to Dench to inaugurate a squirrel enclosure at his Wildlife Centre. Instantly clicking, the two have been inseparable ever since, although they have made it clear that marriage is not an option because of their age. "Let's all accept our age and remain grounded," Dench shared with Good Housekeeping in 2017.

2012

The actress known for her role in Shakespeare in Love has been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration, a condition that causes a decline in vision. During a 2023 interview with The Mirror, Dench discussed how this has impacted her work, expressing, "It becomes challenging for me when I have a substantial role. I haven't yet discovered a method that works because I have many friends who help me learn the script."

Previously, Dench has openly spoken about her condition, including at a Vision Foundation benefit in 2021. During the event, she explained, "You find ways to navigate and overcome the challenges that you encounter. I rely on repetition to learn and I just hope that people won't notice too much if I struggle with the lines."

2015

In 2015, Dench starred in a film version of Roald Dahl's beloved children’s book Esio Trot. Portraying a grieving neighbor to Dustin Hoffman's character, who was a retired bachelor, the acclaimed Chocolat actress delivered a remarkable performance that earned her a well-deserved nomination for Best Actress at the 2016 International Emmy Awards.

2023

The Iris actress has made numerous appearances in various programs, including Stephen Sondheim’s BBC concert Old Friends, where she mesmerized the audience with her rendition of “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music. She also became the focal point of a documentary called The Divine Judi Dench: Our National Treasure, which aired on Channel 5 in April 2023.

In August, Dench appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for a one-off show called I Remember It Well: Judi Dench in Conversation with Gyles Brandreth to recount her entire life story.
