John Goodman, known for his role in The Righteous Gemstones, made a striking appearance at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco, showcasing his noticeably slimmer physique. The 70-year-old actor, who served as the festival's jury president, exuded elegance in a double-breasted navy blazer and khaki pants. Completing his ensemble were brown loafers and stylish round-framed sunglasses, adding a touch of sophistication to his overall look.

In 2016, Goodman estimated that he weighed 400 pounds before he decided to make a change. “I simply stopped constantly indulging in food,” he shared with ABC News at that time. “I would mindlessly consume food, almost as if I had an addiction. In the past, I would take a break for three months, shed off 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack of Bud or any other alcoholic beverage, only to return to my previous unhealthy habits. However, this time I wanted to adopt a slower approach, incorporating exercise and movement. I am reaching an age where I can no longer afford to remain sedentary. Besides, it provides me with the necessary energy to tackle work, which can be quite draining.”

Goodman revealed that his motivation to shed pounds stemmed from his dissatisfaction with his own appearance. "I reached a point where I couldn't bear to see myself anymore," he shared. "Even the act of looking in the mirror while shaving became daunting."

Goodman's personal trainer, Mackie Shilstone, revealed that the actor's weight loss journey was a gradual process that involved a combination of diet and exercise. Shilstone emphasized that it was not an overnight transformation, as Goodman had successfully shed over 100 pounds. To kickstart the process, Shilstone recommended a Mediterranean-style eating plan that included foods like fish, nuts, olive oil, vegetables, and fruit. In addition, Goodman committed to a rigorous exercise routine consisting of elliptical and treadmill workouts six days a week, ensuring he achieved a daily step count between 10,000 and 20,000.

Goodman ceased consuming alcohol nearly a decade ago, a decision he attributes to his successful weight loss. In 2018, he disclosed that he used to drink on the set of the television show Roseanne, which was originally aired from 1988 to 1997.

During an interview on Sunday Today With Willie Geist, Goodman confessed, "I was incredibly fortunate because I continued to get hired for roles, despite the fact that I would drink while working. My speech would become slurred, and I mistakenly believed that I was fooling people. However, my flushed cheeks were a clear indication of my intoxication. I simply resembled a stop sign."

Goodman sought help after missing a rehearsal for the 2007 Emmys, where he received an award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. He recalls feeling shaky and still drinking on that Sunday morning, but also having a moment of clarity where he realized he needed to be hospitalized. He reached out to his wife, which was a difficult decision for him, and she made the necessary arrangements for him to enter a treatment center. It was during his detox there that he began to appreciate the positive changes he was experiencing. Since then, it has been 10 years since he made that decision.

Goodman has been married to Anna Beth Hartzog since 1989, and they have a daughter named Molly, who is now 32 years old.
