The marathon will kick off with Gojira, the 1954 film that introduced Godzilla to the world and started a genre of movies featuring actors in rubber suits destroying model cities. Despite its serious tone, Gojira reflects on the horrors of the atomic bomb unleashed on Japan at the end of World War II. Following that, Carpenter will present Rodan from 1956, Toho's first color kaiju film, featuring a gigantic pterosaur-like creature. The third film, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster from 1964, brings together Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra to combat their formidable adversary with triple threats, known as Ghidorah or Monster Zero. This monster has been a persistent rival of Godzilla and was last seen in the 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Finally, the marathon concludes with War of the Gargantuas from 1966, a kaiju film featuring two colossal creatures born from the heart of Frankenstein's Monster battling it out to the detriment of Tokyo.
