After its release, Halloween became one of the most successful independent movies ever made and spawned a franchise consisting of 13 films. Apart from directing the original film, Carpenter also co-wrote the screenplay and composed the now-iconic Halloween score.

Not all surviving cast members attended this event, including Charles Cyphers (Sheriff Brackett) and Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie Strode). Nevertheless, Carpenter's presence feels like a significant moment in his career. Horror has always been a major focus in Carpenter's work, with films like The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and Village of the Damned. However, he hasn't directed a horror movie since 2010's The Ward, which is also his most recent directorial feature.

Carpenter is currently preparing for the release of his Peacock miniseries titled John Carpenter's Suburban Screams. This miniseries marks his return to directing, though it was done remotely. However, this highly anticipated comeback didn't happen overnight. While it's been a while since Carpenter directed a movie or television project, starting from The Ward, he has always stayed close to the horror genre.

One of the most notable ways Carpenter stayed involved with horror was by returning to the Halloween movies as a producer and co-composer. He worked on the 2018 film Halloween, as well as its sequels Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. Not only that, Carpenter also released several albums featuring his horror-inspired musical compositions. He even went on tour to perform these compositions, along with his iconic scores.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Carpenter directed music videos for various song releases. He also co-composed the score for the upcoming film Firestarter, set to be released in 2022. Furthermore, he made a cameo appearance in the Foo Fighters horror movie Studio 666, foreshadowing his eventual return to the horror genre.
