Hollywood icon, Joan Collins, is determined to enjoy Cher's performance without any interference from Harry Styles. The 90-year-old Collins recently shared her account of Styles' alleged conduct at the 2019 Met Gala, where the 77-year-old Cher took the stage.
In her new memoir, Behind the Shoulder Pads: Tales I Tell My Friends, released on October 24, Collins recounts the eventful night when Cher graced the stage. After her first number, Cher made a grand comeback, adorned in her iconic Bob Mackie–style sleek black embroidered bodysuit and a voluminous black curly wig, to deliver a stunning rendition of 'Believe.' Collins shares how their view was hindered as Harry Styles unexpectedly jumped onto the table in front of them, ignoring their pleas to lower himself. Nonetheless, the crowd's enthusiasm was palpable as the performance electrified the sophisticated attendees. Collins reminisces about hitting the dance floor with Bette Midler and Julianne Moore, while also spotting Gwyneth Paltrow and Katie Holmes thoroughly enjoying the spectacle.
Despite the controversy surrounding Styles, 29, Collins had a phenomenal evening at the glamorous event.
"I absolutely adored my inaugural experience at the Met Ball, and I would unquestionably attend again without hesitation," she expressed. "However, with each seat costing a staggering $30,000, I'll patiently wait for an invitation!"
The 2019 Met Gala, with the theme "Camp: Notes on Fashion," was co-hosted by Styles, Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, and former Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele.
Joan Collins made an appearance at the 2019 Met Gala. She decided to wear a beautiful white Valentino gown, as she had become a brand ambassador for Valentino that year. To pay homage to her iconic Dynasty character, Alexis Carrington, she infused her outfit with elements that reflected her character's style. She collaborated with Valentino to create the dress and expressed her desire for an abundance of feathers during an interview with Vogue in May 2019.
Collin aimed to capture the essence of Susan Sontag's definition of "camp" in her essay "Notes on Camp," which includes the image of a woman donning a dress adorned with three million feathers. Reflecting on her choice of accessories, Collin pondered, "What could be more camp than a tiara?"
Before facing Styles at the event, Collins reminisced about the "surreal" experience of arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that evening. She shared with Vogue the challenges of navigating the fifty pink steps in her voluminous skirt and towering five-inch heels.
Famously recognized for her portrayal of Alexis Carrington on Dynasty from 1981 to 1989 (with a revival on The CW from 2017 to 2022), Collins has also established herself as a fashion icon. Interestingly, she holds a strong aversion towards jeans.
Expressing her sentiments in an interview with Vogue in November 2019, Collins shared, "I genuinely hope that people will invest more in their wardrobe as the art of dressing up seems to be fading away. Nowadays, if you make the effort to dress elegantly, you often attract unwanted attention or receive snide comments. It's disheartening because it may ultimately discourage women from seeking out exquisite attire in stores. Instead, everyone may gravitate towards denim and T-shirts, which I find truly unfortunate."
"I despise jeans, finding them extremely unflattering. Moreover, I cannot stand jeans with knee or any other kind of distressing. Additionally, T-shirts adorned with logos do not appeal to me. While I appreciate comfort, I also strive for elegance."
