Ji Chang-wook, known for his role in The Worst of Evil, has an outstanding career spanning romance, fantasy, and action genres. However, he recently expressed his slight disappointment with a bloody action scene in the K-drama.
Disney+ subscribers are ecstatic about The Worst of Evil and have awarded the cast a full five-star rating for their captivating performances. Ji took on the role of Jun-mo, a detective with a low rank who seizes the opportunity to advance his career by going undercover.
Infiltrating one of Gangnam's criminal gangs, he finds himself descending into darkness as his wife gets involved as well. This creates a complicated situation for him, juggling his duties as a cop, a husband, and the newfound ally of the crime boss. Actor Ji has proven himself to be a star when it comes to action sequences.
Fans were amazed by his transformation on-screen, as he transitioned from a lovable character to a ruthless gang member. By the end of the ninth episode, his previously pristine cream suit was drenched in blood. Ji takes pride in his well-received K-drama action scene, but he admits to feeling disappointed because another scene stole all the attention.
Ji Chang-wook’s kiss scene got more attention
The Worst of Evil star laments how his kiss scene with his co-star Bibi got the spotlight over his meticulously executed fight scene in Episode 9.
In the ninth episode, Jun-mo reaches the gang's headquarters in a state of chaos. A rival gang has launched a surprise attack, resulting in the brutal killing of their members. The intensity of the situation causes Ji's character to transition from a pleasant date to a scene of gruesome carnage. As the fight reaches its climax, Jun-mo becomes drenched in blood from head to toe.
During a Daum interview, the actor expressed his disappointment that the scene didn't receive the prominence it deserved.
"The fight scene in the office hallway was captured in a single take, and I believed it would resonate with the audience. However, it was disappointing to see that the kissing scene garnered more attention than this intense moment," he expressed. "I wanted to portray the wicked actions I committed in a desperate and chilling manner as a means to save Uijeong. To achieve this, I collaborated with the makeup team, discussing the possibility of adding more blood and wearing bloodshot contact lenses," he revealed in a rough translation of the original Korean article.
The kissing scene took place in Episode 8 before the fight sequence, featuring Jun-mo and Hae-ryeon, Bibi's character. Jun-mo, who is undercover, has no option but to pretend to reciprocate her feelings and go along with their dating. Later, at her hotel, she forcefully surprises him with a passionate kiss, leaving fans awestruck. These scenes are quite common in K-dramas, so it wasn't shocking that it became a hot topic in town. As a Gen Z fan, I can understand Ji Chang-wook's disappointment. Action scenes are often overlooked in favor of more romantic or dramatic moments, and it's a shame that his hard work and dedication didn't get the recognition it deserved.
That said, I can also appreciate the power of a well-executed kiss scene. In a K-drama, these scenes are often used to create tension and excitement, and they can be just as memorable as any action sequence. Ultimately, I think it's important to strike a balance between action and romance in order to create a truly satisfying drama.
