The initial trailer for No Way Up introduces a terrifying new scenario: instead of snakes, what if sharks somehow infiltrated your plane – and could even growl? In 2006, Samuel L. Jackson made a memorable declaration about the snakes on a plane, but now the threat has evolved.
The how and why of the snakes being on the plane initially isn't critical, as the entire film begins to unravel if it's taken too seriously. However, it did spark the question: what if other animals found their way onto an airplane?
"No Way Up" will delve into that scenario, but it won't be a Sharknado situation with sharks soaring through the sky and onto the plane. Think more along the lines of "47 Meters Down" - only more dire.
No Way Up trailer trades snakes for sharks on a plane
A comprehensive package addressing a variety of phobias is showcased as the passengers find themselves onboard a plane that crashes into the Pacific Ocean and sinks to the depths below. Their situation becomes even more dire as they realize they are not only isolated and facing drowning, but are also surrounded by sharks. Adding to the tension, the plane is slowly descending towards a steep drop into the abyss, leaving them with the daunting task of finding an escape route without becoming shark bait.
The official synopsis states: "After a plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean and lands on the edge of an underwater ravine, the survivors must quickly find a way to escape the airlocked galley where they are trapped."
In the trailer, sharks can be heard growling twice, which may be a nod to Jaws: The Revenge's roaring great white. In reality, sharks do not have vocal cords.
"I can't believe the shark...growled?" commented one X/Twitter user, while another shared a clip from the 1987 film and humorously added, "Growling, roaring sharks are a classic tradition in cinema." Directed by Claudio Fäh and written by Andy Mayson, the film features a talented cast including Sophia McIntosh, Colm Meaney, Phyllis Logan, Grace Nettle, and Will Attenborough.
Unlike The Meg and its sequel, No Way Up will receive an R rating due to "language and bloody/grisly images," so audiences can definitely expect some intense deep sea action.

As a hard fan of shark movies, I am thrilled about the upcoming release of "No Way Up." The trailer promises a terrifying and heart-stopping experience, taking the classic shark horror genre to new heights. The concept of sharks infiltrating a plane and turning a routine flight into a nightmare is both original and terrifying. I can't wait to see how the passengers will fight for survival against these ferocious predators in the confined space of an airplane.
The trailer also hints at the psychological aspect of the film, as the passengers not only have to deal with the threat of sharks but also the isolation, drowning, and the sinking plane. This multi-faceted approach to horror is sure to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout the movie. The growling sharks add an extra layer of eeriness, even though it's scientifically inaccurate. I appreciate the nod to classic shark movies like "Jaws: The Revenge," acknowledging the genre's history while bringing something new to the table.
