James Van Der Beek’s eldest daughter, Olivia, has made her live television debut.
Van Der Beek, 46, shared on Instagram that when Olivia expressed interest in auditioning professionally at 15, he fully supported her. He reminisced about how his own mother took him to NYC for auditions when he was starting out.
When the opportunity for Olivia to participate in #WeAreFamilyFox arose, Van Der Beek encouraged her to pursue it. He helped her prepare by arranging voice lessons and guiding her through the audition process.
Olivia, 13, participated in Fox's We Are Family, a music competition show featuring celebrity relatives showcasing their musical talents. Each contestant performs a duet with their famous family member. In Olivia's case, she sang alongside the Dawson's Creek alum during the episode that aired on Wednesday, February 28.
"He continued, “She’d never sung in front of people before. So proud of my baby girl.”
Van Der Beek, disguised in the set's "sphere," appeared alongside his daughter as they performed Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance."
James, who is married to Kimberly Van Der Beek and shares Olivia with her, reflected on the performance, saying, "When I watched her tonight, all I could see was the newborn in the bassinet who I could not stop looking at in awe. Kid's still got it."
Alongside his Instagram caption, James uploaded footage taken backstage with Olivia.
“I want to do it again! And I will do it again,” Olivia gushed in the clip after their performance wrapped.

James and Kimberly, who got married in August 2010, have six children together: Olivia, Joshua (12), Annabel (10), Emilia (7), Gwendolyn (5), and Jeremiah (2). Kimberly, who is 41 years old, has also experienced several miscarriages.
Throughout the years, James has openly discussed his experiences as a father. In a recent exclusive interview with We, he shared how the coronavirus pandemic has influenced his perspective on parenting.
James shared with Us in September 2020 that he has been learning to prioritize. He reflected on how many of the things he used to fill his time with did not truly bring him happiness or serve him. He realized that many of his pursuits were based on outdated ideas of what would make him happy or on fulfilling someone else's expectations or dreams.
He also mentioned the importance of being present in his life, especially with his children and family. James emphasized the significance of paying attention to what he consumes, whether it be food, media, stories, or entertainment. He now evaluates if these things enrich him, make him happy, give him energy, and how they make him feel afterwards.
One month later, James and Kimberly moved their family from Los Angeles to the suburbs of Texas.
